Cambo-Les-Bains offers several ways to shape a stay: Villa Arnaga and Saint-Laurent Church represent the history of architecture and the town; the thermal park, nature area and local farms add landscapes and food culture to the mix. This lets you take culture, nature and local produce into account when planning your trip.

Architecture and Local History

Edmond Rostand lived with his family at Villa Arnaga from 1906 until his death in 1918. The estate itself also has a clearly defined status: all its built and undeveloped areas are protected as a historic monument. The gatehouse and mill are exceptions and are protected only in terms of their façades and roofs. The relevant order is dated May 13, 2016. Rostand’s time there and the later protection decision shed light on different chapters in the villa’s history.

The present-day Saint-Laurent Church dates from the 17th century. Three levels of carved galleries surround the nave; the raised choir is paved with mosaics. The galleries divide the church interior into several levels, while the choir’s position and mosaic floor distinguish it as a separate architectural area. Alongside the age of the building, Saint-Laurent offers specific details to look for when appreciating its architecture.

Thermal baths, trade and food production are also part of the town’s history. The thermal baths resumed operation in 1977 after an interruption of more than 40 years. Until the 18th century, Bas Cambo had a port for exchanging goods along the river route. Maison Fagalde began operating in 1787 and was the first to industrialize chocolate production using steam-powered machines. These developments mark different periods: the resumption of thermal bathing, as well as earlier trade and production history.

Landscape and Thermal Park

The thermal park is freely accessible year-round. If conditions change, check access locally. La Colline de la Bergerie is a 17.5-hectare sensitive natural area on the heights of Cambo-Les-Bains. It offers a 180-degree view of the Basque peaks of Artzamendi, Ursuia, Mondarrain and Rhune. The focus on landscape is quite different from the architectural details of the villa and church: here, the view stretches across a wide angle to four named peaks.

Tours and Food Culture

The Cambo-Les-Bains Tourist Office offers three themed tours for locals and visitors. The tour calendar is seasonal, so check the dates for your travel period.

At Ferme Harizkazuia, visitors can explore the farm and observe beehives. They can also learn about the stages of honey production, find out more about making organic honey and sample beekeeping products. The visit programme may vary by season; visiting hours and booking conditions are also seasonal. Check them for your preferred dates.

At Ferme Kultur Piment, visitors learn about the cultivation and history of AOP chilli peppers and the stages of production; tasting workshops are also available. Visiting hours and booking conditions are seasonal here, too. The two farms have different focuses: Harizkazuia is dedicated to bees and honey, while Kultur Piment focuses on growing and producing AOP chilli peppers. Choose according to which product’s journey from origin to tasting you would like to learn more about.
