Gotein-Libarrenx combines preserved historic buildings, Basque culture and leisure activities by the Saison River. When choosing a holiday rental, one question can help: are you more interested in local history and events, or in exercise, play and the loop in Libarrenx? The following topics offer different ways to shape your stay.

Local history in historic buildings

Château d’Arbide in Gotein is one of the preserved historic buildings in the two villages of Gotein and Libarrenx. The Château de Gotein is first mentioned in 1377 under the names La Salle and Jaureguiçahar. This historical reference provides a specific date for the building’s history.

The Église à clocher trinitaire de Gotein has been classified as a Monument historique since 1924. This brings two distinct historical reference points into view: early names and a date are documented for the château, while the church has a formal classification. The Maison Forte (Château) d’Arbide is also part of Route 6 – La Soule. For culture enthusiasts, this offers two ways in: the history of the buildings and their place on the route.

Basque culture and local festivals

Abotia’s Xiru programme brings together music, theatre, singing and visual arts, as well as workshops in Basque dance and Euskara. The artistic events sit alongside activities that explore dance and language. Individual events may change, so check the current dates before your visit. In 2026, the Xiru festival held its 36th edition.

The festival committee organises the celebrations in the two districts of Gotein and Libarrenx. The programme includes concerts, dances, méchouis, serenades and card-game competitions. The committee also organises qualifying rounds for the French Mus Championship. Music, communal celebrations and card games give the festivities different focal points. It is a good idea to check the dates of specific events in advance.

Leisure by the Saison River and in Libarrenx

The Parcours santé is located beside the Saison River in Gotein-Libarrenx. Its facilities include a fitness trail, children’s play equipment and picnic tables. Exercise, play and a break outdoors are all available in one place.

Nearby, in Libarrenx, the Parcours artistique is a 1.7 km loop with information panels on the trees and sports equipment along the river. The loop is not marked. Bear this in mind when navigating if you plan to follow this route.

The two options also differ in their layout: the Parcours santé brings together several facilities in a recreation area, while the Parcours artistique is a 1.7 km, unmarked loop. This gives you a choice between a place with facilities and a route to follow.

Crafts in La Soule

Traditional espadrille-making is also part of La Soule’s cultural heritage. Espadrilles Arsène Loka is an artisan workshop in the Basque Country, in the heart of La Soule, the historical birthplace of the espadrille. Production is entirely local and follows traditional methods: the sole is braided from natural cord, followed by assembly and finishing. The process involves several consecutive steps, from braiding to the finished espadrille.
