Gan offers several distinct ways to explore the area: the history of a bastide, distinctive church architecture, a guided wine tour and trails through vineyards and countryside. Depending on your interests, you can discover the town through its history, wine or outdoor activities.

Bastide history and architecture

A striking testament to the bastide’s history is the Ancienne porte de ville, dite Prison. It is the only surviving fortification of the bastide of Gan, founded by Gaston II de Foix in 1335. The gate later served as a prison and has been listed as a historic monument since 30 December 1994. This building offers a glimpse of both the town’s founding and its later use.

Saint-Pierre Church also features a distinctive architectural detail: a wooden barrel vault shaped like an inverted ship’s keel spans the nave and apse. Its shape recalls the keel of an upside-down ship and gives the structure its distinctive character. Together, the gate and the vault illustrate two different aspects of Gan’s architectural history: the bastide’s former fortifications and a characteristic feature of church construction.

Winemaking and terroir

The Cave de Gan–Jurançon offers a guided tour to explore the world of wine. Follow the journey of a grape from the arrival of the harvest through to bottling. Stops include the press room, fermentation tanks and the partially underground ageing cellar. The tour covers several stages of winemaking rather than focusing on a single product.

The tour of the winemaking facilities is followed by a wine tasting. Four fun, educational trails have also been designed for the Cave de Gan Jurançon to highlight the distinctive features of the terroir. If you plan to take a tour or attend a tasting, check the latest visitor information beforehand, as arrangements may change.

Walks and countryside

The Gan Patrimoine en écomobilité route is 4.4 km long and an easy walk for everyone. It connects to TER line 55 between Pau and Bedous. If you plan to combine the route with a train journey, check the timetable for your travel date. The Gan Patrimoine route includes a fun, educational trail through the vineyards.

At 7.52 km, the Coteau de Bastarrous is longer and is described as an easy, two-hour walk for families. The route passes through vineyards, forests and country lanes, with panoramic views of the Pyrenees. It also reaches Lac de la Teulère and its fossil site. The two walks therefore differ in more than just length: the Coteau also has a stated duration and takes you through a succession of different landscapes.

The fossil site at Lac de la Teulère formed when a former marl quarry filled with water, creating a pond. The site is home to rich biodiversity across its water bodies, bankside vegetation, forests and meadows. The destination thus brings together a geological story and several distinct habitats. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest route information before setting out.

When choosing a hotel in Gan, you can weigh up these options: bastide history and architecture, winemaking, or walks focused on the landscape and nature.
