Bas-Adour-style funerary steles, Labourdin half-timbered houses and views of the Pyrenees are distinctive highlights of a visit to Villefranque. Also worth exploring are its medieval settlement history, a designated natural area and named routes.
Basque-Labourdin Heritage
Cultural highlights include noteworthy Basque-Labourdin funerary steles, particularly those in the Bas-Adour style. Other features of the local heritage include Labourdin-style half-timbered houses and imposing manor houses. One named example is Dona Martienea, also known as Saint Martin. The former manor house is next to the church of Saint-Barthélémy’s entrance porch.
The church of Villefranque is protected as a historic monument; it was designated as such on October 19, 1927. It contains an altarpiece depicting the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew. An earlier period in the settlement’s history dates back to the 11th century, when Villefranque was a sauveté belonging to the Bishop of Bayonne. A sauveté was a settlement founded by the Church, with a guarantee of protection from attacks granted by the local lord.
The style names distinguish between different groups of heritage: Bas-Adour refers to the style of the funerary steles, while Labourdin refers to the half-timbered houses. The historical dates are also far apart: the sauveté dates to the 11th century, while the church was designated a historic monument in 1927.
Barthes de Quartier-Bas Natural Area
Barthes de Quartier-Bas is a continental Type 1 ZNIEFF natural area that also includes Villefranque. The area is designated for its ecological interest and its importance to birds and mammals. Its habitats include wet meadows and tall-herb communities, improved grasslands, agricultural land, peat bogs and marshes.
The habitat types therefore range from wet and marshy areas to land used for agriculture. The area’s natural profile also reflects its importance to birds and mammals. Its natural environment cannot be reduced to a single landscape type.
