Montayral has two distinctive sides: a layered architectural history and activities that draw the eye to the starry sky. The landscape along the Lot is another highlight, as the river widens here into broad meanders. Choose from historic buildings, astronomy, flights and local specialities to shape your visit around your interests.

Châteaux and architectural history

Montayral has five châteaux, including two on the riverbank. At the fortified Moulin de Garrigues, which dates from the 14th century, cross-shaped loopholes have been preserved. An elegant machicolated turret rises above the pointed-arch entrance. These individual architectural features give the mill its own distinctive character.

The history of the Château de Ladhuie spans several centuries: it was a fortress in the 12th century and was transformed into a Renaissance residence with mullioned windows in the 15th and 16th centuries. Two clearly distinct building phases can therefore be seen side by side. The Château de Montayral was built in the 13th century by the lords of Orgueil. It lies on the road to the airfield and is partly hidden by vegetation.

The surrounding area also has its own distinctive landscape. Near Montayral, the Lot widens and forms pronounced meanders; at the same time, its valley becomes gradually less deeply incised.

Stargazing and flight experiences

The GAP 47 Astronomical Observatory in Lagrolère, Montayral, offers public astronomy evenings. The programme includes guided sky tours with the naked eye, a laser-guided exploration of the constellations, and telescope observations under domes. A digital planetarium complements these activities. If you are planning a visit, check the current dates and booking conditions.

A free 2.5-kilometre walk also leads from the Observatory along the GR652. A scale model of the solar system is presented along the way. Check the trail conditions before setting out. This experience differs clearly from the observations at the Observatory: here, the model accompanies a walk, while guided sky tours, telescopes and the planetarium are the focus there.

The Aéro club Vallée du Lot offers introductory and sightseeing flights, as well as flights by day and at night. Its activities also include flight instruction for beginners and advanced pilots, and a microlight flight school. Flights depend on the weather and the operator’s availability; the availability of lessons may also change. Bear these conditions in mind when planning, as they distinguish the flight experiences from the astronomy activities.

Pruneaux d’Agen and local produce

At Roucadil, the focus is on the production of Pruneaux d’Agen, with a guided tour of the workshops where Agen prunes are processed. Tastings are available afterwards. The Roucadil shop also offers prune-based specialities, Périgord walnuts, hazelnuts from Lot-et-Garonne and almonds from southern France. Its range also includes semi-candied mirabelle plums, chocolate-coated fruit, homemade chocolate, gift baskets, wines and foie gras. While the workshop tour focuses on the production process, the shop focuses on the products for sale. Visiting arrangements and the range may change, so check them before planning your visit.
