Barbaste offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: historic buildings, a cycling route, countryside trails and sporting activities. Culture and outdoor activity come together especially clearly at Moulin des Tours, with its exhibition on the mill’s 800-year history, and along the 23-kilometre Scandibérique Greenway.

Architectural history and distinctive buildings

Two dates relating to Château Faulong should be kept distinct: the residence dates from the first half of the 17th century, while it was listed as a historic monument in 1977. Moulin des Tours was built between the 12th and 14th centuries. Its exhibition tells the mill’s 800-year history. Thus, the building’s construction period and the exhibition’s longer historical narrative sit side by side.

The church of Béas also has a distinctive architectural feature: a bell wall. It is dedicated to Sainte Quitterie. Together, the three buildings illustrate different cultural themes: a residence listed as a historic monument, a mill with an exhibition, and a church with its own architectural form and dedication.

Cycling on the Scandibérique

The Greenway between Barbaste and Sos is part of the Scandibérique (EV3) and follows a converted former railway line. It is 23 kilometres long and surfaced mainly with fine gravel; trekking or gravel bikes are recommended. The length, surface and bike recommendation address different planning questions: they indicate the route’s distance and offer guidance on a suitable type of bike. If you are planning the cycling part of your trip, you can consider these details together rather than relying on the route name alone.

Countryside routes with different profiles

The Cauderoue–Sainte-Catherine loop passes through a fertile plain irrigated by the Gélise and then enters woodland planted predominantly with pine and oak. The Barbaste–Béas–Lausseignan route presents Barbaste on the Gélise, between hills and woodland. The “Gélise, frontière des sables” route runs alongside the last dunes of the Landes massif and leads from agricultural hill country to old mixed woodland.

The routes therefore highlight different landscapes: the Cauderoue–Sainte-Catherine loop is characterised by its plain and pine-oak woodland; the other two descriptions focus on hills and woodland. The “Gélise, frontière des sables” route also includes the last dunes of the Landes massif. If you are choosing by scenery, you can distinguish between an irrigated plain, woodland, and the transition from agricultural hill country to old mixed woodland.

Golf and other sporting activities

Albret Golf Expérience in Barbaste has an 18-hole, par-72 course measuring 5,810 metres. Cap Cauderoue is a 50-hectare nature and sports park with a forest adventure course. Activities on offer include canoeing, mountain biking, pony rides and horse rides, orienteering, treasure hunts, archery, as well as mini golf and disc golf.

The two sporting venues also differ in how they are described: for the golf course, the number of holes, par and course length provide specific details; Cap Cauderoue combines the park’s size and adventure course with a wide range of activities. This can help you decide whether to include a clearly defined golfing focus or several different sports in your travel plans.
