The Abbaye de Sorde brings together ancient mosaics and imposing Benedictine architecture on the Gave d'Oloron, amid a protected natural landscape. It is classified as a historic monument and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. These connections offer different ways to explore Sorde-Lʼabbaye during a stay: the abbey’s history, archaeological remains of the Gallo-Roman villa, and paths and activities by the water. When planning, distinguish above all between the type of visit, the season, and the time required for each activity.
The Abbey and the Gallo-Roman Villa
The archaeological site of the Gallo-Roman villa of Sorde contains a private bath complex and mosaic floors. The complex was heated by a hypocaust, a system that conducted heat beneath the floor. The mosaic floors date from the late 4th to early 5th century. With its ancient mosaics and Benedictine architecture, the abbey offers a different historical focus. You can therefore consider the villa’s archaeological details and the abbey’s cultural heritage as distinct themes for your visit.
Visits and seasonal opening
Self-guided and guided visits are offered at the abbey from April to November. The program also includes activity booklets, interactive terminals, art workshops, and performances by Scène actuelle. Exact dates may vary; check them if a particular tour, workshop, or performance is central to your visit. A guided tour of the villa’s archaeological site, including an introduction to its mosaic floors, is also available. It lasts about an hour. Reservations with the abbey are required for additional places.
Canoe trips on the Gave d’Oloron
2X AVENTURES offers a range of canoe trips on the Gave d'Oloron: full-day whitewater trips, half-day trips with small rapids, and a 1-hour-and-45-minute trip on calm water through the Petite Amazonie. The options differ in duration and water conditions. For a shorter trip with a clearly defined duration, choose the calm-water tour; the other options are described as half- or full-day trips. The formats may change with the season. If you have a particular trip in mind, check which format is available during your chosen period.
Paths and viewpoints
The Landes section of the Voie de Tours-GR655 stretches for 150 kilometers, from the village of Le Muret to Sorde-l'Abbaye. The Circuit des falaises et du Gave loop offers a different focus: it follows the edge of the cliffs and provides views of the Gave d'Oloron valley, the Basque Country, and the Pyrenees. Access to the viewpoint is subject to a special condition: the owner tolerates access, and caution is required. Keep this in mind if you plan to visit the viewpoint.
Getting there and finding accommodation
The Abbaye de Sorde can be reached via exit 6 of the A64 and the D29 between Peyrehorade and Salies-de-Béarn. Parking is available at Place de l'église; check road conditions before setting out. If you are looking for accommodation for your stay, first decide which visits will shape your trip. The abbey’s seasonal program, the approximately one-hour tour of the villa, the changing canoe options, and the different walking routes give you specific points to consider when planning.
