At low tide, the mouth of the Courant de Mimizan forms wide sandbanks that are popular with families. Plage du Courant has a smoke-free beach. Mimizan’s beaches are supervised from May to September. If you plan to visit during this period, check local regulations before travelling. Plage du Courant is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has two Tiralo beach wheelchairs. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to confirm them before your visit.

Beach, tides and trails along the Courant

The Courant de Mimizan can be explored along riverside paths, by bike, or on the water by canoe and paddleboard. Another option on foot is the Circuit de la Maillouèyre: it follows the Courant, passes through the Landes pine forest and reaches natural dune and forest habitats. This means you can choose an outing focused on different landscapes and ways of getting around: the Circuit passes through river, forest and dune areas, while canoeing and paddleboarding let you explore from the water.

Cycling between beach and forest

The Vélodyssée-Piste cyclable de la Côte is an easy, 4.6 km cycle route separated from motor traffic that runs parallel to the beach. It starts in Mimizan-Plage. The Vélodyssée-Piste cyclable des Dunes is 4 km long and also separated from motor traffic; it runs from west to east through the state forest and follows former dunes. This gives you a choice between a beach route and one connected with forest and dunes. A section of the Vélodyssée can also be used from the centre of Mimizan-Plage. Check local route conditions before cycling.

A bike ride from Mimizan-Plage to the wild beach of Lespecier is 7 km. Surface and access conditions on this nearby route may change; check local conditions before setting out.

Building and local history

The Chapelle à la mer was built of wood and opened for worship on 19 July 1900. In summer, it serves as an exhibition venue about the history of the area. Check current exhibition arrangements before visiting. Église Notre Dame des Dunes was built on the banks of the Courant in 1969 to replace the parish chapel. The wooden construction, opening date and later church building offer different insights into the town’s architectural history.

The Monument Les Ailes commemorates the 1929 crossing of the North Atlantic by Assolant, Lefèvre and Loti. It remains a landmark of the seaside resort and a destination for a walk. The Mimizan-Plage arenas were inaugurated on 28 June 1970. Together with the religious buildings, the monument and arenas broaden the historical themes to include remembrance and public architecture.

The family-friendly treasure hunt “Mimizan d'hier et d'aujourd'hui” takes you through the streets of Mimizan-Plage and Mimizan Bourg and introduces the town’s hidden history. It is available in 2026; check availability again for later years. Alongside individual buildings, this offers an activity spanning two local areas.

Skatepark in Mimizan-Plage

The skatepark is a freely accessible facility of around 1,300 m², with City Stade, Plaza and Bowl areas. The Bowl zone is 1.80 to 3 m deep. The three areas give the site a clear layout, and the depth information helps identify the Bowl as a distinct part of the facility. As access conditions may change, confirm them before your visit.
