In Toulouzette, two rivers meet farm visits and a layered architectural history. The Adour forms the boundary of the village, while the Gabas flows through it. There is also a natural pond, a circular route along the Voie Verte de Chalosse, and a canoe route that can start in Toulouzette. This offers visitors a range of ways to plan their stay: enjoy the outdoors by the water, explore on foot or by canoe, visit farms and see historic buildings.
Between the Adour, the Gabas and the pond
The two rivers have different connections to Toulouzette: the Adour forms a boundary, while the Gabas flows through the village. The Adour is also important for migratory fish and the European mink. The area is defined not only by its visible waterways, but also by their ecological role. Another place to pause and unwind is the natural pond, where you can relax or fish; check access and local conditions before your visit.
Along the Gabas, you can combine waterside activities with a farm visit: after tasting products at Ferme Loupret, visitors can stroll along the riverbanks, fish, linger or enjoy a picnic. This makes the Gabas a destination in its own right, while the Adour is relevant both for the canoe route and for its importance to migratory fish and the European mink.
On foot or on the water
The Toulouzette–Montaut circular route starts at the town hall square. It is rated easy and follows the Voie Verte de Chalosse through the valleys of the Adour and Gabas. A canoe route on the Adour can also start in Toulouzette. These are two different ways to experience the area: the walking route heads towards Montaut, while the canoe route takes the river as its starting point. Check the route conditions before setting out; water levels can vary seasonally.
Farm visits and produce
At Ferme Loupret, a tasting is included as part of a tour, which is offered by appointment every day except Sunday. As this is a current visitor offering, it is advisable to confirm your appointment in advance. The Gabas can be enjoyed as another part of your stay: after the tasting, you can walk, fish, linger or picnic along its banks.
Ferme Comet-Tournier offers tours of its goose and duck farm, corn production chain, force-feeding operation and family cannery. Arrange your booking and access before travelling. The farm’s products include goose and duck foie gras, duck and goose confit, and rillettes. The two farms offer different experiences: at Loupret, the tour includes a tasting; at Comet-Tournier, the focus is on visits to the production and processing areas listed above.
Church, fountain and Maison de Couhin
The Church of Sainte-Quitterie dates from the 16th century and is dedicated to Sainte Quitterie, the patron saint of Gascony. It was rebuilt after being destroyed by Protestants in 1569. Its single-nave structure, built of pebbles, gives the building a distinctive architectural feature. A single-nave structure is a central church space without side aisles; the term helps explain the building’s form without reducing the church to its age.
The Maison de Couhin also tells a story of Toulouzette’s past. It is considered the oldest house in the village and was a caverie, a fortified residence that guarded a crossing over the Adour. This historic function creates a direct connection between the building and the river. The Fontaine Sainte Quitterie is set in green surroundings not far from the village centre. It is believed to have healing powers. Together, the church, Maison de Couhin and fountain offer different ways to explore Toulouzette’s history and architectural heritage.
