On the edge of Landes Chalosse, Bénesse-Lès-Dax lies in a hilly, rural landscape. Among its defining heritage sites are the only windmill in the Landes department, Saint-Michel Church and Fontaine Dupéré. Walking trails for discovering the local heritage and visits with wine tastings are also among the experiences on offer.

Mill, Craftsmanship and Panoramic Views

The Moulin de Bénesse-lès-Dax stands on a 97-metre-high hill and offers a 320-degree panorama. Its elevation and sweeping views place the structure in the hilly landscape on the edge of Chalosse. In 2018, the mill was restored to revive the local milling heritage. Its prominent setting is thus linked to a specific history of preservation and craftsmanship.

Saint-Michel Church: History and Fittings

According to tradition, Saint-Michel Church was originally the chapel of the lords of Bénesse. After a fire, it became the parish church on 10 October 1723. Its history brings together local tradition about its former role and a precisely dated change in the 18th century.

The church contains a holy-water font dating from 1757, now used as a baptismal font, as well as an 18th-century tomb from the high altar. Both objects refer to this period; the font also reflects a change of use that continues to this day. These furnishings add specific objects and their different functions to the building’s history.

Fontaine Dupéré: Spring and Terracotta

Fontaine Dupéré, also known as Fontaine salée, contains a salt- and sulphur-rich spring. The distinctive terracotta structure may date from the 1850s. Its material, the nature of the spring and its possible date give this site a character different from that of Saint-Michel Church and the windmill.

The fountain is 500 metres from the road between Dax and Peyrehorade, used by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Alongside the history of the structure and its spring, this also connects the site to a regional road used by pilgrims.

Visits and the Route to Reception

Visitor information, updated on 26 June 2026, lists guided tours and immersive virtual-reality visits. A guided tour and an immersive VR experience thus offer different ways to explore the mill. Family cooking workshops are also available: participants prepare dough and bake it in a traditional bread oven.

From the car park, an uphill footpath of about 300 metres leads to the reception and service building. When planning your visit, allow for both the approximate distance and the incline.

Walking Trails and Wine

Walking trails in Bénesse-Lès-Dax offer a way to discover the local heritage. They complement visits to individual buildings with another way to get to know the area’s heritage.

Domaine de Pribat regularly offers tours and tastings of its Coteaux de Chalosse appellation wines. While the mill and church put historic buildings in the spotlight, these visits focus on wine. If you are planning a tasting, check the specific visit dates in advance.
