Eschbach-Au-Val brings together a clearly documented village history and the Émile Hertzog Trail, which leads to the foot of Petit Ballon. The buildings reveal traces of different periods; the trail follows a series of specific places. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether architectural history, scenery, or both will shape your stay.

Architectural history in the village center

The farmhouse at 36 rue Principale dates from the late 18th or early 19th century. Its dwelling is made of plastered granite rubble stone. The ground-floor window surrounds are made of pink sandstone; the windows on the upper floor and in the attic have oak frames. Window surrounds are the frames around window openings. This distinction helps you tell the sandstone detail apart from the oak frames and the masonry.

The former washhouse, dating from the 19th century, tells another story of everyday life. It stands opposite the town hall and has an elegant bell tower. As a shared community space, it was used by women to boil, beat, scrub, and wash laundry; they also chatted there. Its former use brings everyday work and social exchange together in one place.

The town hall and school can also be placed in its historical context: it was built in 1862 and is listed in the inventory. Its campanile was destroyed by a bombardment in 1915 and later restored. The village center also has traditional houses dating from the 18th century. Together, these buildings reveal traces of different periods: from the 18th-century houses to the town hall and school, and then to the destruction and restoration of the campanile in the 20th century.

Scenery and the Émile Hertzog Trail

Eschbach-Au-Val lies in a green valley that climbs to the foot of Kahlenwasen (Petit Ballon). The Émile Hertzog Trail leads from the lower village via Obersolberg and Erschlitt to Buchwald at the foot of Petit Ballon. The trail is accessible to everyone. The valley describes the landscape setting, while the named places along the way and the destination make the route specific.

Two different points of reference are therefore central: the landscape rising to the foot of the mountain, and a specific route with a named destination. If you are interested in the trail, you can follow its description from the lower village via Obersolberg and Erschlitt to Buchwald. The information about the valley and the trail refers to different aspects of the place and the route.

Views and local tradition

The Dorfhüss (village hall – function hall) offers an unobstructed view of the mountain ridges of the petite Vallée de Munster. This view adds a distinct perspective on the surrounding mountain ridges to the rising valley and the trail to Petit Ballon.

Eschbach-Au-Val also has a traditional St. John's bonfire. Alongside its architectural history, this brings a local tradition into focus: the farmhouse, washhouse, and town hall and school represent specific buildings and former uses, while the St. John's bonfire reflects another aspect of the village's culture.
