Hohrod offers three themed circular trails, traces of the First World War and a farm with tours and tastings. If you are looking for accommodation for your stay, you can first consider whether you are mainly interested in hiking, discovering local history or learning about local production. The trails, historic sites and craft activities each offer a different focus.

Hiking Trails and Natural Landscape

Hohrod has three themed circular trails and is connected to the 400 kilometres of marked hiking trails in the Munster Valley, including the GR5 variant 531. The Barrenkopf Trail leads directly to Glasborn and passes through the village’s communal high-altitude pastures. There are walking and hiking opportunities on the Rosskopf, at Versant du Soleil. This offers several points of reference for outings, without prescribing a particular route or fixed daily itinerary.

Nature is also a defining feature of the area: Hohrod’s natural landscape is designated as a Natura 2000 site. The forests can accommodate environmentally friendly outdoor activities. If you are planning your stay around your interests, you can consider these natural features alongside the themed circular trails.

Traces of the First World War and Local History

The Hohrodberg–Linge historical trail passes by structures dating from the First World War. These include a German blockhouse, preserved as a remnant of the front line fortified by German troops from the summer of 1915. The trail also passes a German command post that remains in very good condition.

The Monument aux morts de la Guerre 1914-18 stands on Route du Linge in Hohrodberg. It was erected around 1925 in memory of the soldiers and civilians who died in the First World War. Another perspective on the area’s history comes from the account of how Hohrod and Hohrodberg came to be: it is linked to an early community of courageous pioneer workers known as the “Hohe Roder.” Memorial sites and a local origin story therefore sit side by side.

Farmhouse Cheese and Tours

The Ferme Versant du Soleil in Hohrod makes farmhouse cheeses using traditional methods, including Munster AOP, Barikass and Tomette. Product availability may vary. Guided tours with tastings are offered year-round on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.; an additional session is available on Fridays in July and August. Check the tour schedule again before your trip.

Self-guided visits are also possible during shop opening hours. Information boards and a short video provide guidance. This option is limited to shop opening hours; guided tours take place on the specified days and at the stated times.

Local Crafts

Au Bonheur des Ours offers introductory woodturning sessions. You can make your own candle holder or mushroom. Booking is recommended; check the workshop details in advance, as they may change.

Doris Baerenzung offers woodturning demonstrations in a workspace set up on the ground floor of her house in Hohrod: Monday to Friday at 9:30 a.m. Check these times before your trip. The traditional casting of livestock bells is also part of the local craft tradition: according to an April 2025 report, Daniel Higlister continues the craft in his workshop in Hohrod. According to the report, he is considered the last livestock bell caster in Alsace and one of only three such bell casters working in France.
