At the end of the Schernetz Valley and at the foot of Ungersberg, Reichsfeld combines its hillside village setting with a strong focus on hiking. Winegrowing and historic landmarks also add further dimensions to the village. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the options: alongside numerous hikes in the direction of Ungersberg, there is a specific, moderately difficult 16.9-kilometre circular hike and the VERONICA botanical trail.

Hillside setting and hikes at Ungersberg

The houses in Reichsfeld are set in hilly terrain. More than half of the municipality’s area is covered by forest; the village itself lies at the end of the Schernetz Valley and at the foot of Ungersberg. Reichsfeld is a starting point for numerous hikes in the direction of Ungersberg. When planning an outing, then, the focus is not just on a single route, but also on the option of making hiking a central part of your stay.

One specifically described option is the Andlau–Ungersberg–Bernardvillé circular hike. It is moderately difficult, 16.9 kilometres long and takes about 5.5 hours. The loop reaches Reichsfeld after Ungersberg and continues from the church in the direction of Bernardvillé. Given its stated duration, this is a longer hike, so you should allow plenty of time. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The VERONICA botanical trail

Unlike the circular hike, the VERONICA botanical trail focuses on plant and habitat diversity. The trail passes through forests, vineyards, meadows, orchards, fallow land and heathland. It also introduces several plant species listed in Alsace’s Red List of Threatened Species, including the flower Véronique. This offers a distinct way to experience the landscape: here, the focus is on the different habitats and the plants the trail draws attention to.

The car park for the botanical trail is at the entrance to Reichsfeld, next to the playground in Leh. Check the parking situation again before your arrival. The trail and the longer circular route have different emphases: VERONICA focuses on habitats and plants, while the Andlau–Ungersberg–Bernardvillé loop is defined by its distance, moderate difficulty rating and stated hiking time.

Winegrowing and offerings at Domaine Borès

Winegrowing is also part of Reichsfeld’s character. Domaine Borès is located in Reichsfeld at the foot of Ungersberg and has been growing grapevines since the 18th century. It describes Sohlenberg and Schieferberg as its two outstanding terroirs. This long winegrowing tradition adds a distinct local focus to the hiking and nature themes.

Domaine Borès lists Apéro Gourmand and Pique-nique chez le vigneron among its special offerings. If you would like to include one in your trip, check availability and whether booking is required in advance. The Domaine gives its usual visiting hours as 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and asks visitors to announce their visit beforehand. Check the opening hours again before arriving; the stated times are not a guarantee that visitors will be welcomed throughout that period.

Historic landmarks in the village

Reichsfeld’s cultural heritage includes the Maison aux Dîmes, Maison de Tonnelier, de Vigneron—the house of a cooper and winegrower. The year 1714 is inscribed on the cellar entrance door, and 1720 at the foot of the stairs. The story of the house also includes the origins of two columns: they are said to have come from Baumgarten Abbey.

Another dated landmark is a bowl depicting John the Baptist, which belongs to Reichsfeld church and is kept in the presbytery. It dates from 1690 and is classified as a protected object.
