A stay in Plaine can be planned around a variety of interests: a playful trail leads through the village and forest, the Saint-Arnould parish church tells the story of several construction phases, and the Jardin de Niargoutte showcases botanical diversity. There is also a chocolate workshop and a ride on a scale-model steam locomotive. You can choose between landscapes, architectural history, remembrance and indulgence.
Discover the village and forest
The Balade ludique Plaine is a fun family walk through the village and its forest. It offers a viewpoint overlooking the Climont; a variant leads to the Étang de la Falle. The routes described therefore include both a viewpoint and a waterside destination. The Rocher de la Chatte Pendue reaches a height of 899 metres. At Le Tortillard, visitors can enjoy a 20-minute ride on a 1:3 scale-model steam locomotive. The ride duration gives you a specific indication of how long this experience takes.
Remembrance and architectural history
The Nécropole nationale de Plaine is located on Rue du Général-Tabouis. It contains the remains of soldiers who died for France during the fighting in the Bruche Valley in the summer of 1914 and during the liberation of the Colmar Pocket in 1944–1945. An equestrian statue of Joan of Arc stands on the site, commemorating the sacrifice of those who died in the First World War.
The Saint-Arnould parish church was rebuilt around 1740. Parts that have survived from this period include the lower section of the entrance or tower porch, part of the nave and a holy-water font dated 1743. The church was extended after the war: work began in 1923, and the consecration took place on 22 September 1924. Its architectural features include rendered masonry, a three-storey entrance porch, a three-bay nave, a transept and a semicircular choir. The surviving parts, the holy-water font and the later extension make the different construction phases easy to trace.
Garden and chocolate workshop
The Jardin de Niargoutte is home to more than 1,000 plant species, including trees, shrubs, perennials and bulb plants. Private visits are possible by appointment; arrange your visit in advance. Its botanical diversity is a clear draw for anyone interested in different groups of plants.
Chocolat Chic runs an artisan chocolate workshop and shop in Plaine, in the heart of the Bruche Valley. Its offerings include chocolate creations, figurines, pralines and other chocolate specialities. Together with the garden, this destination adds a culinary highlight to the historical and landscape themes.
When planning your visit, also consider the conditions for each attraction, particularly the appointment required for private visits to the Jardin de Niargoutte.
