Mollkirch combines forests and agriculture with cultural history and hiking. Specific places to visit include the ruins of Château de Guirbaden, as well as trails of varying lengths and difficulty. You can tailor your trip according to whether historic buildings, an educational trail in the municipal forest or a longer circular route is your main priority.

Forests, Agriculture and Autumn

Mollkirch is largely shaped by forests and agriculture. In autumn, the area is a popular destination because of its many chestnut trees. This distinction is useful when choosing when to visit: forests and agriculture shape the landscape year-round, while the chestnuts make autumn especially significant.

Ruins and Chapels

The ruins of Château de Guirbaden lie within Mollkirch and cover two hectares, including the surrounding walls. The eastern half of Château de Guirbaden and the Saint-Valentin Chapel date from the 12th century. These dates place two named parts of the area’s cultural history in the same period.

The Kloesterle Chapel in Laubenheim was consecrated in 1135 and rebuilt in 1720; its Romanesque portal has been preserved. The consecration and rebuilding mark distinct moments in its history, while the portal is a surviving architectural feature. The 1135 consecration also dates to the 12th century; the 1720 rebuilding belongs to a much later phase in the chapel’s history.

Château de Guirbaden can be visited independently. Guided tours for groups and individuals are available by prior arrangement. The Kloesterle Chapel can also be visited independently. At the château, a guided tour by prior arrangement is therefore an additional option alongside an independent visit.

Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

The Sentier des Demoiselles de Pierre is a 5.5-kilometre educational trail in Mollkirch’s municipal forest. Fairies engraved on stones point the way for hikers. The figures combine a recognisable motif with a practical wayfinding function, shaping the trail’s character.

The Circuit entre rocher et château is a 15-kilometre circular route of moderate difficulty. It starts at Gare d'Heiligenberg-Mollkirch railway station and passes the Rocher du Grauschlag rock. From there, hikers can enjoy a beautiful view of the neighbouring peaks. The station and the rock provide a named starting point and a distinctive viewpoint along the route.

There are two distinct hiking options: the 5.5-kilometre Sentier is an educational trail with wayfinding figures, while the 15-kilometre Circuit is a moderately difficult circular route with a named viewpoint. The distances make the scale of the two options easy to compare; the Circuit also has a moderate difficulty rating.
