In Saint-Jean-Saverne, the architectural history of the abbey and the cultural landscape around Mont Saint-Michel take center stage. There are also hiking trails with different themes: one leads to a Celtic oppidum, while others take in chapels, parish churches or archaeological sites. When planning your trip, you can choose between the history of the abbey and different ways to explore the area.

Abbey History and Sacred Architecture

The Ancienne église abbatiale is classified as a Monument historique because it was included on the list in 1840. After the abbey was rebuilt later, only the Romanesque nave of the abbey church remained. It was remodeled and given a tower porch. Its architectural history therefore includes both the surviving Romanesque nave and its later alterations.

The collection in Saint-Jean-Saverne also offers a tangible insight into the town’s art history: it includes eight tapestries from the 16th century. The exhibition venue may change, so check where the tapestries are currently on display before your visit. Another historical landmark is the Saint-Wendelin Chapel, which was consecrated on October 20, 1738.

Mont Saint-Michel: Landscape and History

The Mont Saint-Michel site comprises a rock, a cave and a chapel overlooking the village and the plain. The site can therefore be viewed both in terms of its landscape and its sacred history. Use dating from the Mesolithic, Late Iron Age, Carolingian period, Middle Ages and modern era has been identified at the site. This spans a period from prehistoric times through to the modern era.

The chapel on Mont Saint-Michel is also associated with the Brotherhood of Saint Michael, founded in 1593. Mont Saint-Michel is freely accessible all year round, although temporary closures are possible. A quick check of current notices before your visit will help you take this possibility into account when planning.

Hiking Trails with Different Themes

The Circuit du Mont Saint-Michel follows the Heidenstadt trail to the Celtic oppidum. This trail therefore focuses on an archaeological destination. If you are interested in sacred architecture, the Circuit des Chapelles offers a different focus: the circular trail leads to chapels and parish churches in the municipalities of Saint-Jean-Saverne and Eckartswiller. Access to individual buildings may vary.

The Circuit des Chapelles is listed as easy, with a length of 6.8 kilometers, a positive elevation gain of 152 meters and an estimated duration of two hours. These figures provide a useful guide when planning the hiking portion of your day. The entire loop is marked with green circular markers; check the markers and trail conditions on site.

A third way to explore the archaeology is the circular trail through the heights of Ernolsheim-lès-Saverne and Saint-Jean-Saverne. It comprises five stages. At each stage, an information board explains the main features of the site. You can therefore choose from different trail formats when planning: a destination at the oppidum, a circular hike to sacred buildings or a loop with explanations at several stops.
