Furdenheim brings together several distinct themes to explore: the architectural history of the church, the architecture of Ferme Wurtz, the Art & Lumière summer festival, and activities centred on exercise and crafts. You can tailor your stay to what interests you most—historic building periods, art as part of a festival, physical activity, or ceramics and knife-making. The church and Ferme offer different ways to explore the architectural heritage; the festival, park and workshops complement these highlights with events, exercise and crafts.
Architectural history at the church and Ferme Wurtz
The present nave of the church in Furdenheim was rebuilt in 1822, after the earlier nave was demolished in 1820. The chancel tower is all that remains of the original 13th-century church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Another date relates to the uppermost level of the bell tower: it dates from 1874. These dates therefore refer to different parts of the building. Together, they represent a medieval structure, the rebuilding of the nave and a later building phase of the bell tower. For architecture enthusiasts, this sequence offers a concrete way to appreciate the church without reducing it to a single period of construction.
At Ferme Wurtz, the emphasis is less on a sequence of building phases than on materials and architectural form. It was built from Vosges sandstone at the beginning of the 18th century. Its portal is inspired by the Renaissance. The Ferme is also known as Schoppes-Hof and has an arrangement typical of winemaking: the cellar opens onto the gable facing the street. The portal design and cellar layout are therefore two distinct features of the building. In contrast to the church, whose history can be traced through several dates, the architectural character of the Ferme is shaped by its building material and its winemaking-related form.
Summer festival and exercise
Art & Lumière is an annual summer festival in Furdenheim. It includes street exhibitions under the name “cathédrale des arts” and an open-air water show. The show combines water ballet, pyrotechnics and music performed by a symphony orchestra. The exhibitions and the show offer different highlights: art in the streets alongside an outdoor programme featuring several performance elements. If the festival is an important reason for your trip, check the specific dates for that year's edition before booking.
The Parc Sports / Santé / Loisirs offers a different focus. It was inaugurated in June 2023 and provides a wide range of facilities so that people can be physically active regardless of their physical condition or state of health. Alongside architectural history and festival culture, exercise is therefore a distinct focus in Furdenheim. The park may interest you if you would also like to include physical activity in your travel plans alongside cultural experiences.
Ceramics, knives and seasonal produce
Au grès de la terre combines a ceramics workshop with a shop in Furdenheim and offers pottery and ceramics classes for adults and children. If you would like to plan a class, check availability in advance, as the programme may change. Atelier La Bigorne adds to the crafts theme: it is a workshop and exhibition space where Nicolas Palmade makes and exhibits knives. Showroom visits are possible by prior arrangement.
At the entrance to Furdenheim on the RN4, the Ferme Wick sales stand offers seasonal fruit and vegetables, delicatessen products, and goods processed by local partner producers. Its seasonal selection sets it apart from a fixed range of products. Products and opening arrangements may also change; if you are planning a specific purchase, check the current options before your visit.
There are several different themes to choose from: the church and Ferme Wurtz invite you to explore architectural history and architecture; Art & Lumière brings together exhibitions and a water show; and the park and workshops add exercise and crafts to the offer. This lets you explore Furdenheim through the themes that matter most for your stay.
