An approximately eight-metre-high waterfall in a rocky basin and hiking trails with clear route details give Urmatt a distinct natural character. The area also features La Porte de Pierre, made of pink sandstone, and traces of local history. When choosing a route, it is worth comparing the different details: the Circuit des Croix has a stated duration, while the Sentiers des Géants consists of several loops that can be combined.

Hiking Routes with Different Details

The Circuit des Croix is a 9 km circular route and takes about three hours. It is suitable for all age groups and includes several calvaries, some of which date from the French Revolution. The route thus combines a specified distance with historic roadside crosses.

The Sentiers des Géants offer something different: five walking loops, each 6 to 8 km long with no more than 300 metres of ascent, can be combined. You can choose based on your preferred distance and maximum ascent. Unlike the Circuit des Croix, the focus here is not on a single circular route, but on choosing and combining several loops.

Another hiking option is the Urmatt–Schirmeck stage. It is marked with the red rectangle of the Club Vosgien and follows the Grande Randonnée GR® 53. From the Col de l’Engin, it follows the GR® 5. Trail conditions and local markings may change; check both before setting out.

Waterfall and Sandstone Formation

The Soultzbach waterfall lies in a rocky basin above Urmatt and forms a waterfall about 8 metres high. A path runs along the stream to the waterfall.

La Porte de Pierre is a natural monument made of pink sandstone in the forest of the Donon massif. Its double-gateway shape is 5 metres high and 7 metres wide; it lies at an altitude of 858 metres. The two natural attractions offer contrasting highlights: water and a rocky basin at the waterfall, and a striking sandstone formation at La Porte de Pierre.

Church, Garden and Sculpture

The Church of Sainte-Croix in Urmatt was built to plans by architect Alexandre Matuzynski. On 29 October 1865, Monsignor Raes, Bishop of Strasbourg, consecrated it. The date and architect give the building a clear historical context.

The Jardin du Souvenir is open to the public and was renovated in 2021. It is best to confirm access before planning a visit.

Sculpture is also part of Urmatt’s cultural history: two sculpture symposia produced 17 monumental works under the titles “In situ” and “La Roche Solaire.” They form a distinct cultural strand alongside the church and garden.
