Discover Utajärvi through several layers of time: its rocks tell the story of the bedrock’s development, while the church, vicarage and railway station reveal different chapters in the village’s history. There is also a cultural trail to the church village’s historic sites, as well as places where you can take in the landscape. On your trip, you can choose your own focus, moving between geology, cultural heritage and time outdoors.
The history of rocks at Kivipuisto
Kivipuisto illustrates the development of the Finnish bedrock through more than 50 large rock samples. The oldest rock in the park is 3.5-billion-year-old Siurua gneiss, considered the oldest rock in the bedrock of the European Union. The park’s timeline therefore reaches far beyond the construction history of the church village. For anyone interested in geology, it offers a distinct way to discover Utajärvi: the focus is not on a single building, but on rock samples and their long history of formation.
The church village and its historic buildings
Utajärvi Church was completed in 1762 and has 320 seats. People have lived on the vicarage grounds since the 17th century. The oldest parts of the present main building date from 1763; other parts were built in the 1890s and 1950s. Utajärvi railway station was added in 1927 and has been classified as a regionally significant cultural heritage site. Together, these dates reveal different chapters in the village’s history without reducing it to a single period.
The cultural trail lets you explore the church village’s cultural and historic sites on foot. Near the church are a heroes’ cemetery and several memorials. The monument to those who died in Karelia is made of red granite and was erected in 1958. On the old market square, the Roomaripatsas statue commemorates the work of log drivers and ferrymen. The Veteraanikivi, a memorial stone completed in 1991, stands in Veteraanipuisto, opposite the library by Postilanoja. These places each give prominence to a different aspect of the village: church history, remembrance and a former occupation all have their own place in the local landscape.
Exhibitions at Torimakasiini and the local heritage museum
Torimakasiini is in Utajärvi’s central built-up area, at Vanhatie 8. Its “Aikamatka” exhibition tells the story of how the landscape of the Rokua UNESCO Global Geopark was formed: from the bedrock’s early stages of development, through the last Ice Age and the formation of ridges and dunes, to the spread of human settlement and living things after the Ice Age. The ground floor has a seasonal café and an information point, while the exhibition rooms are upstairs. The café is open seasonally, and the exhibition rooms offer another perspective on the history of the landscape.
The “Utajärven aikajana” exhibition follows a different timeline, presenting the history of Utajärvi from the land rising out of the sea to the most recent events. The local heritage museum is next to the church, in a former granary, and has about 300 catalogued objects. The museum grounds also house a rapids boat, built after an early 20th-century model, in a shelter. These sites focus both on the long development of the landscape and on artefacts and local history.
Views and outdoor activities
Kutukukkula is a viewpoint near the centre, where you can take in the Utajärvi landscape. Another activity is the 18-hole disc golf course in Siiransaari, near the centre, set in wooded, hilly terrain. Both offer a way to engage with the landscape, but in different ways: one through views of the surroundings, the other through disc golf in wooded terrain.
There are also year-round opportunities to spend time in nature elsewhere in the municipality, with routes for hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing. One destination in the wider municipality is Kurimo, by the Kurimonkoski rapids, where nature experiences go hand in hand with the history of the former, once thriving ironworks community. The Sotkakosken möljä is a preserved stone embankment in the river behind the Sotka cemetery. It can be reached by a path leading to a steep riverbank. These locations are in the municipality and not exclusively in the church village.
The different themes can help you choose what to include in your trip: Utajärvi offers historic buildings and memorials in the church village, geological insights at Kivipuisto, and landscape and nature experiences in the village and across the municipality.
