The Hyytiälä Research Station is situated on the scenic shore of Lake Kuivajärvi. The surrounding area has forests of varying ages, and Pehkusuo is within walking distance. There is also a Science Trail on research topics, historic buildings and seasonal activities. When planning your visit, it is therefore especially important to consider which topics interest you and what time of year you plan to travel.

Research topics and activities

The Hyytiälä Science Trail has 18 information boards. They cover forests, soils, lakes, rivers, mires and the climate. This means the focus is not only on trees, but also on a range of landscape and environmental topics. The information on the boards may be updated. If you are particularly interested in research at the station, a guided tour offers another way to learn about it: Hyytiälä offers school and student groups an approximately two-hour tour of the SMEAR II station. There, interactions between ecosystems and the atmosphere are measured. The tour depends on staff availability, so arrange a time in advance.

Another activity is the disc golf course, which starts beside the Hyytiälä Science Trail’s starting point. This allows you to accommodate different interests in your plans: research topics on the boards, a guided tour for school or student groups, or disc golf as a separate activity. These options have different conditions, particularly regarding the target group and scheduling.

Shoreline, forest and seasonal opportunities

The setting by Lake Kuivajärvi, forests of varying ages and Pehkusuo within walking distance offer several landscape highlights. Makkarakallio is a scenic campfire site along the shore path, about 500 metres from the small sauna. The distance and named starting point can help you work this spot into your plans; local conditions may vary.

The season also affects what is available. Ski trails are usually open at Hyytiälä Forest Station from late January to early March. If cross-country skiing is important when choosing your travel dates, check the current situation before you travel.

Historic buildings and accommodation

The buildings in the old courtyard of Hyytiälä Forest Station were completed in 1911–1912. They are part of Finland’s cultural heritage and have been conserved by the National Board of Antiquities and Historical Monuments. The architecture of the old courtyard represents National Romanticism. Hyytiälä thus connects its research topics with a tangible architectural and historical setting: the old courtyard tells a different story about the place than the Science Trail’s information boards.

During the summer season, from May to October, overnight guests stay in the log houses Impivaara, Pilvilinna, Tapiola and Impilinna. They date from the early 20th century. Take this period into account when planning your trip and check the seasonal accommodation information again before booking. The reception team handles visitor arrangements and billing; arrange your visit with them in advance.

Planning your journey

Hyytiälä Forest Station is about an hour’s drive from Tampere. This approximate driving time gives you a guide for planning your journey. If you want to combine several of the activities mentioned, decide on your travel dates first: the log houses are used seasonally from May to October, while ski trails are usually available from late January to early March. Guided tours also require advance scheduling with the reception team.
