Uurainen offers several distinct reasons to visit: movement and sport take centre stage at the centrally located Aittovuori recreation area, while nature trails wind through forest and lakeside landscapes. The area also has a local events tradition, a seasonal café and a specific accommodation option in a 19th-century vicarage. When planning your visit, it helps to organise the offerings around your interests: sporting activities, nature experiences, or culture and accommodation.

Activities in Aittovuori and the village

The versatile Aittovuori recreation area is located in the centre of Uurainen, amid scenic hills and lakeside landscapes. Walking, hill training, disc golf and downhill mountain biking offer several ways to get active. In winter, illuminated cross-country ski trails are also available; they are 2, 3 and 5 km long. The different distances make it easier to choose a route that fits the time you have available. There is also a grill shelter and a kota, or traditional Finnish shelter. The maintenance of winter facilities is weather-dependent.

A pump track for cycling is located near Uurainen’s central sports field. It adds a dedicated cycling spot to the options, while Aittovuori offers a wide range of recreational activities.

Nature trails with different highlights

The 1.8 km Huutoniemi Nature Trail runs along the shore of Lake Kyynämöinen through a sparse pine forest on a ridge. The route offers lake views, and there is a campfire site for picnics and benches along the trail. Huutoniemi thus combines forest and lakeside scenery with places to rest.

The Esan-Petäjä Nature Trail is 0.5 km long and leads to an old pine tree protected as a natural monument under the Nature Conservation Act. While Huutoniemi is described in terms of its lakeshore, pine forest and places to rest, Esan-Petäjä leads directly to a single protected tree. The stated lengths of 1.8 and 0.5 km show the clear difference in trail distance.

Local culture and seasonal offerings

The first Uurainen Week took place in 1971. Over the decades, the programme has included art exhibitions, youth evenings, harvest festivals, traditional church events, sports competitions and local heritage celebrations. Some of these continue today, including Uuraisten Toripäivä, a popular and lively market event. Individual programme items may vary. If a particular event is important to your visit, check the dates in advance.

In the village of Uurainen, the seasonal Selma boutique brings together handicrafts by numerous artisans and local food products, alongside a café. Freshly baked waffles are among the items on offer. As the shop is seasonal, check its current opening arrangements before visiting.

Accommodation and trip planning

Marjoniementila offers a specific accommodation option in an idyllic 19th-century vicarage. Activities such as canoeing and horse riding are also available there; check their current availability separately.

The nearly 50 km Uurainen day-trip route can be travelled by car and, in summer, by bicycle. Plan to take the cycling option during a summer stay. Road and destination conditions can change, so check them before setting off.
