An ancient, protected deadwood pine, a hiking trail about 9.9 kilometres long and Kinnula Church offer different starting points for a trip. Alongside hiking, the Kinnula outdoor area offers sports facilities and seasonal winter activities; the church adds a historic site to the nature and leisure programme. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the individual Nielujärvi Trail from the region-spanning hiking trail network, and considering the specific facilities in the outdoor area separately.

Hiking: A Trail and a Network

The Nielujärvi Trail in Kinnula is about 9.9 kilometres long. It forms part of Peuran polku and the Hirvaan kierros circular trail in Salamajärvi National Park. Blue markers indicate the trail; Nielujärven lintutorni birdwatching tower is along the route.

The Suurijärven retkeilyreitistö hiking trail network covers a wider area. It links an extensive network of trails across Kinnula, Reisjärvi and Pihtipudas. One starting point is in Kinnula on Jääkoluntie, where there is a car park. This lets you choose between an individual trail with an approximate length and a network spanning several areas.

Natural Attractions and Shelters

Kinnula’s Pyhä puu is an ancient, protected deadwood pine at Tikkakangas. It is also known as Tikkakankaan Karhupetäjä and Uhripetäjä. There is a shelter near Pyhä puu. Along the Nielujärvi Trail, Nielujärven laavu shelter is on the banks of the Matkusjoki River. The two places offer different ways to experience nature: the named pine at Tikkakangas and a shelter by the river.

Sports in the Kinnula Outdoor Area

The Kinnula outdoor area has an 18-hole disc golf course. The holes range from 51 to 220 metres in length. There is also a fitness staircase with 104 steps. The outdoor area also has a dog park, which is free for everyone to use.

Winter: Ski Trails and a Toboggan Run

In winter, the Kinnula outdoor area has a 3-kilometre illuminated ski trail and another trail that is 5 kilometres long. A toboggan run is located beside the fitness staircase. There is a kota beside it, which can be used, for example, to grill sausages and warm up. Before taking part in winter activities, it is advisable to check the current condition of the ski trails.

Kinnula Church

Kinnula Church was completed in 1867. It has a cruciform floor plan, with the bell tower adjoining the west arm. It was built by church builder Otto Korkiakoski from Sievi. A visit can be arranged by contacting the staff. If you are planning a visit, bear this condition in mind rather than assuming there are regular opening hours.

The church has two spaces for wheelchair users, accessible via a wheelchair ramp. Access to the church grounds is via Kirkkotie, where there are numerous parking spaces.
