Keuruu offers sites of cultural and historical interest and opportunities to spend time by the water. The old church, the Vanha Keuruu parsonage ensemble and the railway station each offer a different perspective on the town’s history; canoe routes, a paddle steamer and outdoor trails provide further ways to explore. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on architectural history and exhibitions or on activity and time on the water.

Church, Parsonage and Keuruu’s Architectural History

Vanha Keuruu is a parsonage ensemble of cultural-historical and scenic significance dating from the 19th century, on the shore of Lake Keurusselkä. The area can be explored on foot. The old church of Keuruu is an important part of the town’s church history: it was consecrated in 1758 as the parish’s third church. Its decorative paintings were completed later, from 1782 to 1785. The consecration and the paintings mark two different stages in the building’s construction and decoration.

Kamana adds another perspective on the buildings of the old parsonage: the restored stone barn dates from 1903. At Punnonen House, visitors can experience the atmosphere of an official’s residence preserved almost in its original condition, as well as an exhibition by the Keuruu Artists’ Association. These offer different insights side by side—from a restored barn to a preserved domestic atmosphere and the work of a local artists’ association.

Keuruu railway station is also one of the town’s notable buildings from the late 19th century. It was designed by architect Bruno Granholm. The “Keräilyn Kätköistä” exhibition includes, among other things, an extensive collection of Finnish enamelware, old toys and retail goods. Visits to the station and exhibition are possible by prior appointment by telephone; both groups and individuals are welcome. Plan this part of your cultural itinerary with an appointment.

Canoeing and Boating on Lake Keurusselkä

A sheltered canoe route of about ten kilometres runs around Keuruu’s town centre. The route around Kirkkosaari is also about ten kilometres and takes approximately two to four hours. You can factor both the distance and the approximate duration into your day’s plans. Canoes, single and double kayaks, and a large canoe for about twelve people can be rented for the routes; guided tours are also available. Confirm rental and guided-tour options before you arrive.

The paddle steamer Elias Lönnrot also travels on the lake. Its scheduled services run between Keuruu’s harbour in the town centre and Keurusselkä Resort; round trips that return to the starting point are also available. The canoe route offers its own circuit, while the boat services either connect two destinations or return to their starting point. As routes and operators may change seasonally, check the sailings for your travel dates before making plans.

Outdoor Trails and Recreation

In summer, you can run, walk, go Nordic walking or cycle on the trails of Keurusselkä Sports Park. These activities offer different ways to enjoy the outdoors, without requiring you to commit to just one kind of exercise.

Kurkisaari Family Park has a walking trail with boardwalks and two fire pits. Firewood is not provided. The park also has a sandy beach and three berths at the boat landing. If you want to combine a walk with time by the water, you’ll find several places to stop here; bring your own firewood if you plan to use the fire pits.
