Viitasaari combines nature and recreational activities with a distinctive landscape of lakes and islands, as well as cultural attractions. The Savivuori recreation area is located within the built-up area and brings together a nature trail, sports facilities and an observation tower. Vanha Kirkkosaari is a large, almost entirely undeveloped island near the centre and Highway 4. The experiences that take centre stage can therefore also depend on the season.
Nature trails and outdoor activities on Savivuori
The nature trail on Savivuori offers two options: the shorter Rannan lumo and the longer Metsän tuulahdus. This lets you choose between two routes of different lengths. The area also has an extensive network of trails with elevation changes, offering opportunities for mountain biking. Trail conditions and route availability may vary by season. Berry and mushroom picking are also seasonal activities on Savivuori.
Other facilities offer different activities: the disc golf course has 18 holes, suitable for beginners while also offering challenges for experienced players. A MOBO course is available for smartphone orienteering; the app can be downloaded to your mobile device from an app store. As availability may change, it is advisable to check before planning your visit. The observation tower on Savivuori offers views of Viitasaari’s built-up area and the surrounding lake landscape.
Shorelines, an island and winter activities
On the shore of Lake Keitele, Hiekan uimala has a sandy beach, a swimming area enclosed by piers and a diving tower on a separate floating platform. At Paniaisniemi, on the lake shore, there is a lean-to shelter with a fire pit. The fitness stairs near Lummeniemi-Leirikeskus offer another distinctive feature: built in 2019, they are 160 metres long and offer impressive views from the top.
Kirkkosaaren-laavu is located on the southern shore of Vanha Kirkkosaari. The Hiekkalahti shelter on the island has a woodshed, a toilet and a landing stage. In winter, ski trails are prepared around Vanha Kirkkosaari and in the island’s interior, provided ice conditions allow. Seasonal opportunities therefore differ considerably: downhill runs are also part of the winter activities on Savivuori, while the trails on the island depend explicitly on ice conditions.
Sahis Ski Centre has three downhill runs, a platter lift and a conveyor lift for beginners. Operating details may vary by season, so it is worth checking this information before visiting when planning your trip. In spring, the film festival offers a cultural event: Viitasaaren Elokuvaviikko screens Finnish films at the youth centre theatre at Koulukuja 8. The recurring festival takes place in March and April; exact dates may vary.
Culture and views
On Savivuori, the staggered buildings of the Metsätyömuseo form an ensemble that can be viewed from the outside year-round. The interiors have separate summer opening hours; check visiting arrangements in advance. In the town centre, next to Highway 4, stands Lyhty Viitasaari, a strikingly renovated log schoolhouse. Together with the museum and film festival, it offers a different way to experience Viitasaari than its trails, sports facilities and shorelines.
The Heinä-Suvanto bird wetland is also in the vicinity of Viitasaari. It is protected and of regional, national and international importance. A marked nature trail leads to a birdwatching tower; seasonal water levels affect access. Viitasaari and its surroundings therefore offer sports activities, nature watching and culture.
