Rõngu combines a musical instrument museum with medieval architectural history, a monument to the Estonian War of Independence in the heart of the town, and a distinctive landform. The Rõngu String Instrument Museum displays more than 3,000 exhibits; Rõngu St. Michael’s Church is considered the oldest building in Rõngu. Together, these places create a cultural profile that Hiugemägi complements with a connection to the landscape.

The String Instrument Museum and Kõver kõrts

The Rõngu String Instrument Museum is located in the right wing of Kõver kõrts in Rõngu alevik. Kõver kõrts is a former inn and post station building that was restored in 1989. The museum and the building thus come together in one specific place: the more than 3,000 exhibits belong to the String Instrument Museum, while the building’s former function draws attention to its use as an inn and post station. This gives you two cultural points of interest to consider when planning your trip: the collection and the architectural history of the building that houses the museum.

Church and local history

Rõngu St. Michael’s Church is medieval and dedicated to the Archangel Michael; it is also considered the oldest building in Rõngu. Its present appearance dates back to a reconstruction in 1901. This brings the building’s medieval classification together with a later, precisely dated phase of reconstruction. If you are interested in architectural history, this distinction in time offers a concrete point of reference: 1901 is the year of the reconstruction that gave the church its present appearance.

The monument to the Estonian War of Independence, known in Estonian as Vabadussõja mälestussammas, stands in the heart of Rõngu. It commemorates those who fought for Estonia’s freedom and those who fell for Estonian independence. The monument was unveiled on 30 September 1934; after restoration, it was reopened on 21 May 1995. The two dates mark different stages in its history: the original unveiling and the later reopening.

Landscape and orientation

On the northern edge of Rõngu, Hiugemägi rises on a moraine ridge next to the school. This connection to the landscape differs from the historic buildings and the monument: it draws attention to the town’s terrain. If you would like to include the landscape in your trip planning alongside cultural history, Hiugemägi is a distinct point of reference in an overview of the town.

The roads also shape how Rõngu is described. The Jõhvi-Tartu-Valga, Viljandi and Võru roads run through the town; Rõngu is also characterized by a junction where five roads meet. The roads and junction thus add a transport-related aspect to the picture of the town.

Rõngu rahvamaja offers four rooms of different sizes for leisure activities and training. It thus complements the history of museums and monuments with a different local point of reference: spaces intended for activities and training.
