Ilmatsalu offers several ways to explore nature and history: fish ponds, a river, birdwatching and historical connections through its manor and brickworks. At the observation tower and along the birdwatching trail, you can enjoy different ways of observing nature; nearby, there is also the Alam-Pedja protected area and a riverside rest area. When looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether to focus solely on nature or combine it with local cultural heritage.

Two Ways to Observe Nature

From the observation tower in Ilmatsalu, you can look out over the fish ponds and river; the tower is also a good spot for birdwatching. The 5.2-kilometre Ilmatsalu-Kärevere Linnutee birdwatching trail offers a different focus: it is designed for walking, cycling, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. The tower brings the ponds and river into view, while the route connects several observation areas. These different options can help you tailor the nature part of your trip to your interests.

The trail connects the Ilmatsalu fish ponds, the Kärevere bird protection area and the Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve in a chain of birdwatching areas. Floodplains and forests along the Linnutee route are part of Estonia’s Natura 2000 network. A total of 120 breeding bird species have been recorded in the birdwatching trail area. This means the route highlights not only individual viewpoints but also the different landscapes along the way.

Protected Area and Visitor Facilities

Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve was established in 1994, is part of the Natura 2000 network and is one of Estonia’s largest protected areas. The area is accessible from the Ilmatsalu fish ponds, where the Ilmatsalu-Kärevere Linnutee birdwatching trail begins. There is also an outdoor classroom, fire pits and picnic areas. When exploring nature, you can therefore consider both the protected-area setting and the facilities available on site.

Manor History and Architectural Heritage

The chimney of the Ilmatsalu brickworks is also part of the architectural heritage. It is considered a valuable historical building and is to be preserved and restored. Alongside the natural attractions, the brickworks chimney adds a distinct architectural-history note to Ilmatsalu.

A Riverside Rest Area

Near Ilmatsalu, the Rabahane lõkkekoht rest area is located right on the banks of the Ilmatsalu River. It is suitable as a stop for walkers or anglers. Access can be difficult in heavy rain, so bear this limitation in mind when planning a visit.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Trip’s Focus

If you are looking for a hotel in Ilmatsalu, first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. Is birdwatching, with its observation tower, route and protected areas, your main priority, or would you also like to explore the manor history and the architectural heritage of the brickworks?
