Ice Age in Focus
The Ice Age Centre is located on the shore of Lake Saadjärv in Tartu County. Its interactive exhibitions take visitors from the last Ice Age through the present and into the future. This sweep through time makes a visit more than a look back: the present and the future also come into focus. Anyone interested in natural history and long periods of time will find a clear thematic introduction here.
Landscape at Different Scales
Vapramäe Landscape Protection Area covers 99.4 hectares, while the Vapramäe Nature Trail is 3.6 kilometres long. The area figure describes the protected area, while the number of kilometres refers to a specific route—two different ways of orienting yourself in the landscape. In Alatskivi Park, a hiking trail winds through a forest of linden, maple and oak trees. The park covers approximately 130 hectares and surrounds Alatskivi Castle.
Views, Forest and Wildlife Watching
The trail at Elistvere Animal Park leads to a floating platform and a 12-metre-high observation tower overlooking bird-rich Lake Elistvere. At the animal park, you can also observe animals that live, or once lived, in Estonian forests. They are kept in conditions that are as close to nature as possible. The Selli-Sillaotsa nature trail also has a 12-metre-high observation tower. Both towers are the same height; at Elistvere, the lake view is part of the described vantage point.
Manors, Agriculture and Crafts
The Estonian Agricultural Museum at the historic Ăślenurme Manor presents the development of Estonian agriculture and rural life. Cooking workshops are also offered there; check availability before your visit. Alatskivi Castle offers a different historical perspective: it explores the life of an aristocratic family and everyday life on a manor in the 19th century. Visitors can make a personal souvenir in a ceramics workshop. It is also recommended to enquire about this activity in advance.
The Estonian Aviation Museum adds another point of interest. Its outdoor exhibition includes 32 aeroplanes and gliders, as well as six helicopters. The collection numbers may change.
Traditions and Culinary Insights
The Hellenurme Mill Museum is Estonia’s last historic watermill still in operation. Its bakehouse offers traditional Estonian rye bread made on site. The offering may vary depending on booking arrangements. At Vapramäe Forell, visitors can fish for sturgeon or trout themselves; the business is open seasonally.
Mesi Tare’s boat tour runs along Lake Peipus to Old Believer villages. Before your trip, check whether the tour operates seasonally and whether advance booking is possible. At the Kolkja Old Believers Museum, visitors can learn about Old Believer traditions and ways of life.
