Toila’s coast and Oru Park offer different points of interest to consider when planning a stay. The beach lies on the Gulf of Finland, at the mouth of the Pühajõgi River. Shallow boulders line the narrow strip of sand. Access to the beach leads through Oru Park. Those who want to include parkland and trails as well as the shore can consider these separately when planning.

Oru Park: Cliffs, Valley and Woodlands

Oru Park lies in the valley of the Pühajõgi River, at the mouth of the Klint Bay, on a sandstone cliff. Its 75-hectare area is home to 258 different species, varieties or forms of trees and shrubs. Oru Park is also the Oru Park Landscape Protection Area. A visit therefore focuses both on its location in the valley and by Klint Bay, and on the variety of its trees and shrubs.

Visitors can walk through the well-signposted and well-maintained Oru Park. The Green energy trail begins in the park above Hõbeallika Spring. Visitors can also explore the Hõbeallika (Silver Spring) Cave in Oru Park. The walk, trail and cave are separate points of interest for anyone wishing to include the park in their plans.

Hiking Trails and Different Route Lengths

The Toila-Martsa hiking trail starts in the settlement of Toila and follows the Baltic Klint both along the top of the cliff edge and below it along the coast. There is a 3.2-kilometre Toila loop and a longer, 6.5-kilometre route to choose from. The longer option is a little more than twice as long as the loop.

The Green energy trail and the Toila-Martsa trail are two named ways to experience the landscape. On the Toila-Martsa trail, the route as described alternates between the cliff edge and the coast. The Green energy trail begins above Hõbeallika Spring.

Palace History and a VR Experience

Oru Park and the magnificent palace in the valley of the Pühajõgi River were built by Grigori Jelissejev. In 1935, three Estonian industrialists bought the palace and park and gave them to President Päts for use as a summer residence.

VR Toila 1938 offers another way to explore Oru Manor. Visitors can rent a VR headset there and see Oru Manor brought back to life. The experience includes three different journeys. This virtual portrayal complements the historical connections of the park and palace with an experience distinct from a walk or hike.

Beach, Harbour and Getting Around Toila

Toila Beach has beach volleyball and a trampoline for children. These two activities are also available on the narrow strip of sand lined with shallow boulders. Toila Harbour is at the mouth of the Pühajõgi River. At the intersection of Mere puiestee and Rannatee Street, there is a bus stop and a car park on the left in Toila.

When looking for a hotel in Toila, it helps to first decide what matters most to you: the beach, Oru Park, one of the trails described here, or the history surrounding the palace. These different themes offer different points of reference without prescribing a set itinerary.
