Sillamäe combines Stalinist architecture with a coastal landscape shaped by the sea and waterfalls. At the seaside promenade, the historic town and the coast meet: it connects the historic town centre with the coast and includes an adventure trail and a multi-storey, seven-metre-high observation tower. The town parks and waterfalls also offer their own highlights for a stay.

Architecture in the Townscape

Mere puiestee features a symmetrical design characteristic of the 1950s and façades in the Stalinist neoclassical style. The street also includes a historic pavilion and an architectural ensemble by the sea. Those interested in architectural history will find more than a single building here: the street, façades and pavilion represent different aspects of the town’s architectural character.

Built in 1949, the cultural centre is recognised as a listed building and preserves Stalinist architecture from the 1940s and 1950s, both inside and out. In the old town, on Kajaka Street, there is a staircase originally built in the 1950s in the city’s neoclassical district and renovated in 2019. These examples reveal architecture at different scales: from an individual structural feature to a public building and the design of a street.

Parks, Coast and Waterfalls

The town park is close to the historic old town and the beach; it is a place for walks and relaxation. At around 20 hectares, Merepark is Sillamäe’s largest recreational park. Its amenities include a swimming beach, a pine forest, fire pits and walking paths. The limestone coast runs through Sillamäe, adding another landscape feature to these urban green spaces and coastal areas.

The waterfalls are worth a closer look for their different formations and water conditions. The Langevoja cascade forms a gorge 10 metres wide and 2 metres deep, and consists of two tiers. As it is fed by springs, it can be dry in summer. Next to the waterfall is a rest area with fire pits, suitable for a picnic.

Ukuoru Waterfall is 7.5 metres high and has a single tier. As the stream usually carries little water, the waterfall is often dry. From Ukuoru, there are views of the Päite Cliff, the town of Sillamäe and the bay. By comparison, Langevoja may be dry in summer, while at Ukuoru it is the stream’s generally low water level that makes the difference.

Museum and Town History

The permanent exhibition at Sillamäe Museum consists of two parts. The first provides an overview of the town’s origins and development. The second is outdoors and offers virtual reality experiences. Another permanent exhibition about the town’s Soviet period is located in the basement of the cultural centre, in a former air-raid shelter.

Sillamäe Museum offers craft workshops ranging from simple handicrafts to elaborate embroidery, as well as guided tours in Sillamäe and the surrounding area. At the museum park “Müstiline Sillamäe,” children can hire three pedal cars and several electric cars.

The adventure “Salapärane Sillamäe – linna varjatud ajalugu,” which can be booked in advance, provides access to a new exhibition with special permission and uses virtual reality to explore Sillamäe’s hidden history. The programme also includes a tasting of period-style pastries and a handmade carbonated drink.

The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00. Check opening hours before your visit. When planning, you can decide how much to focus on architecture and town history, parks and waterfalls, or the different museum experiences; the places and activities mentioned do not make up a fixed itinerary.
