In Narva, fortress history, art and the heritage of the Kreenholm Manufactory sit alongside riverside paths. The more than 700-year-old Hermann Castle acquired its present appearance during the time of the Livonian Order, from the 14th to the 16th century. Visitors to Narva can explore these different sides of the city through exhibitions, guided tours and walks.
Fortress and bastions
Narva Castle covers 3.2 hectares; its highest point is the 51-metre-high tower, Tall Hermann. From there, the view stretches over Narva, the Kreenholm factory and Ivangorod Fortress across the river in Russia. A permanent exhibition in the castle explores history from the arrival of the first Danes on the banks of the Narva River to the present day.
There are also different ways to explore the city’s history below the towers. The casemates of the Victoria Bastion are a visitor attraction offering guided tours, escape games and other programmes. Guided tours explain Narva’s historic defence system and the role of the bastions in times of war and peace. Advance booking for the casemates is required by phone or email. The castle’s North Courtyard is also home to Põhjaõu, an experimental history centre and entertainment venue.
Art, the Town Hall and Old Narva
The Narva Museum Art Gallery is located on the Gloria Bastion in a former granary dating from 1777. Its permanent exhibition, “Elu või karma? Narva lood”, features almost 200 works from the Baroque period to the present day. Gallery tours include both the permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Narva Town Hall dates from the 17th century and combines German, Swedish and Italian architectural influences. On guided tours, you can see historic official and event rooms and learn about the city’s history and legends. The Town Hall exhibition “New Life of Old Narva” uses VR headsets and touchscreens to portray Narva as it was known before the Second World War. As exhibitions and guided tour options may change, check the current dates and displays before your visit.
Kreenholm: industrial history and waterfalls
The Narva Museum runs Kreenholm excursions by reservation and on Sundays at 12 noon from April to the end of October. The tours introduce more than 160 years of factory history amid monumental industrial architecture. As seasonal schedules may change, check the date in advance. Visitors who prefer to explore the neighbourhood on their own can also follow the free Kreenholm QR walking tour through historic streets; QR codes share the district’s history.
The Narva Cascades are located on the grounds of the disused Kreenholm Manufactory. The hydroelectric power station usually supplies them with water from its reservoir during the spring floods. The Narva Museum also runs excursions to the waterfalls; availability may vary by season. The Narva Art Residency is also located on the historic Kreenholm grounds.
Walks, memorial sites and cycling
The approximately one-kilometre-long Narva River Promenade runs along the riverbank in the historic centre and is a good starting point for exploring the city. Its boundaries provide a useful guide: the Narva River lies to the east, the bastion walls and Hermann Castle to the west, Narva Harbour to the north and the Joaorg recreation area to the south. Narva’s sights are within easy walking distance of one another.
The promenade includes the Sun Square, with a seasonal summer café, a fountain and a sundial, as well as the Swedish Terrace, a recreation area for families with lion-shaped attractions for children. In and around the Dark Garden are two memorials: an iron cross erected on the Victoria Bastion in 1853 for Russian soldiers who fell during the siege of Narva in the Great Northern War, and a memorial at the graves of soldiers who fell in the Estonian War of Independence in November 1918. The Dark Garden was laid out on the Victoria Bastion at the end of the 19th century and placed under nature protection in 1959; it is considered Narva’s oldest city park.
Narva is also a signposted point for cycle tourists: the Estonian section of the EuroVelo 10 Baltic Sea Cycle Route leads to the city. City bikes, mountain bikes, fat bikes, tandems, children’s bikes and scooters are available for hire in the Joaorg recreation area. If you have a particular vehicle in mind, check current availability.
