Solpletten, Hadsundbanen and Bælum Church show how differently you can spend a stay in Bælum: enjoying gardens and outdoor activities, or exploring local history and mill heritage. Bælum Kildesø also offers its own nature activities. When planning your trip, the specific differences are particularly useful: Hadsundbanen combines a cycling and walking trail along a former railway line, while cycling routes lead to different destinations. The local attractions therefore offer several distinct focal points when looking for accommodation in Bælum.

Solpletten: a garden by Hadsundbanen

The open ecological garden Solpletten is in Bælum, on the grounds behind the former Solbjerg sawmill, beside the Hadsundbanen cycling trail. The garden features sculptures, a labyrinth, fruit trees and berry bushes. People and animals may freely eat the fruit and berries. Solpletten thus combines landscaped garden features with plants whose fruit may be eaten on site. Picnics, campfires and overnight stays in tents are also possible. Free overnight stays in a tent require prior arrangements; check the local conditions for these activities in advance. Cars are not recommended at Solpletten; access is via the cycling trail.

Cycling and walking routes with different destinations

Hadsundbanen is a combined cycling and walking trail along a former railway line and passes through Bælum. Bælum campsite is beside the trail on the former railway line, between Bælum and Solbjerg, on National Cycle Route 5. From Bælum, cyclists can follow Route 5 through Lille Vildmose or head west on Route 27 to Rold Skov. The named destinations and directions provide two different reference points when choosing a route: Lille Vildmose via Route 5 or Rold Skov westward via Route 27. Hadsundbanen complements these options as a trail designated for both cycling and walking.

Church and mill: two historical perspectives

Bælum Church dates from around 1200 and is a medieval church built of granite blocks. On the south side of the chancel is a chapel dating from 1616, associated with Anne Krabbe, the widow of Erik Kaas. The chapel contains a tombstone for Erik Kaas and his two wives, Berete Seefeld and Anne Krabbe. South of the church, between the porch and the chapel, there is also a Romanesque tombstone with carved lines and a cross. The church brings together several historical points of interest: its medieval origins, the later chapel and the specific funerary monuments.

Bælum Mølle offers a different perspective on the area’s heritage. The mill stands on Præstens Høj. The hill is one of the two highest points in Bælum parish and is about 60 metres above sea level. Bælum Mølle offers insights into local history and mill heritage. In contrast to the church and its funerary history, the mill tradition is a distinct focus.

Kildesø: nature by the lake

Bælum Kildesø is in Bælum Sønderskov, southwest of Bælum. There are benches by the lake, with views across the water. Children and adults can explore nature there with nets and rubber boots. In winter, Kildesø is often used as an ice-skating rink, if conditions allow. If you plan to go skating, check in advance that conditions permit it. The activities available at the lake therefore vary with the season and the conditions required.
