The blue route begins at Virksund Beach; another walk starts at the harbour. Together with the opportunities along the Limfjord and the history of the former ferry service, Virksund offers a range of options for planning your trip—from coastal paths to visits to small museums.
Walks starting at the beach and harbour
The blue route begins at Virksund Beach and follows the coast, as well as private paths and roads through meadows, woodland and cultural landscapes. Yellow and red shortcuts are also part of the route. They can be used when water levels are high or for a shorter circular walk. Choosing between the blue route and a shortcut therefore depends on the water level or whether you prefer a shorter loop.
Another option is Fjord Route No. 6, which starts at Virksund Harbour. The beach and harbour are thus two different starting points for walks and hikes. If you are choosing a route, you can first consider the starting point and the desired length of the loop; shorter alternatives are specifically mentioned for the blue route.
Harbour, nature and activities on the water
Virksund Marina is located at the Virksund Dam and is sheltered from the wind in every direction. Two shelters are situated close to the water at the marina, offering views of Lovns Bredning. The harbour grounds also have several barbecue areas and a modern playground.
The marina is a stopover for visiting sailors, kayakers, motorhome travellers, cyclists and motorcyclists. For kayaking trips, the Virksund Havkajakklub offers an opportunity to set out from the harbour. Virksund Sejlklub invites new crew members to try sailing; check participation with the club in advance. Sailing dinghies for everyone is part of its annual weekly programme.
Winter swimming is also available locally: Virksund has a large winter bathing club with a sauna right by the water. Many different bird species and numerous seals can be observed in their natural surroundings. These nature-watching opportunities, harbour activities and walking routes offer different ways to enjoy a stay on the Limfjord.
Ferry history and small museums
A rowing ferry operated between Sundstrup and Virksund from the Middle Ages until the dam was built in the 1960s. The “Gammel Færgemole” still stands at the dinghy harbour and recalls this connection. The Virksund Egnsmuseum offers an insight into the region’s long history.
Another destination for those interested in regional history is nearby Tanghuset. It houses a small museum displaying tools and exploring the history and significance of seaweed on the Limfjord. Together with the local history museum, it offers a different perspective on Virksund and the region from the routes and activities on the water.
Cycling and getting here
From Virksund, cyclists can follow the Limfjord Route around Hjarbæk Fjord. The route description was updated in 2021; check current route conditions before setting off. Since 28 June 2026, bus journeys between Skive and Virksund have been referred to as Route 410. Check the current timetable before travelling as well.
