Kolind offers a variety of things to explore: hiking trails of different lengths, the Kolindsund landscape and its wildlife, and historic sites. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you want to focus on a particular route, nature watching or culture. The trails take you through Kolind, around the town, through the sund or to old villages. Their length and destinations can help you decide what to focus on during your outing.

Hiking routes around Kolind

“Byens Sjæl” is a 2.5 km hiking trail in Kolind. “Kolind Rundt” is a 5 km route around Kolind and offers information about Romle Stenovn. The 7.5 km “Kolindsund” route passes through an area important for agriculture, nature and wildlife. At 13.8 km, “Landsbyruten” is the longest of these routes; it leads to some of the old villages around Kolind. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in their destinations. “Kolind Rundt” combines a loop around the town with information about the Stenovn, while the longer “Landsbyruten” leads to old villages.

Kolindsund: Birds, Canals and Cycling Routes

Kolindsund stretches from Grenaa in the east to Kolind in the west. Up to 100 different bird species stay there year-round. In late summer, flocks of starlings fly over the sund near Kolind, creating “Sort Sol”; the timing and size of the flocks vary. Birdwatching therefore ranges from year-round sightings to a seasonal natural phenomenon. A birdwatching tower north of Kolind offers views of the nearby meadows.

You can fish for sea trout, pike, coarse fish, rainbow trout and bream in the Kolindsund canals; check local fishing regulations before your visit. For a cycling trip, the gravel paths along the canals offer plenty of options. So, as well as birdwatching, fishing and cycling are other ways to enjoy Kolindsund.

Archaeological and Church History

Romle Stenovn is a well-preserved round dolmen from the Neolithic period. It is located at the northern end of a peninsula on the south side of Kolindsund. “Kolind Rundt” includes information about this Stenovn, giving the route an archaeological focus as well. Kolind Church was built in 1919 on the foundations of a medieval church. The original church in Kolind was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style. The church’s history thus brings together its medieval origins and the building constructed in 1919.

The “Kolind-sten” is a granite runestone. Midtdjurs Local Archive is located in Kolind+ and helps visitors search for archival material. For those interested in local history, archaeological and church-related topics are complemented by the opportunity to look for material in the archive.
