The Mølleåen flows through Femmøller, and the village is one of the gateways to the Mols Bjerge. When planning your visit, it is worth looking at the different trails: they range from a 1.5-kilometre hiking trail to a shortened 10-kilometre circular route. There are also historic mills, a seaside hotel dating from 1909 and nearby Femmøller Beach.
Hiking trails with different route profiles
The yellow-marked Femmøllerstien runs from Femmøller into the Mols Bjerge and is 1.5 kilometres long. Den italienske sti starts at the car park opposite Femmøller Efterskole. The marked trail climbs a steep slope into the Mols Bjerge and continues through woodland and heathland to Strandkær; it is 3.5 kilometres long. Along the way, it passes through a protected natural forest with rare plants, butterflies and small animals.
When choosing between these trails, it is not just the kilometres that matter: the steep slope is also part of the route profile on Den italienske sti. If you are looking for a circular route, the Bjergetapen offers another option. Its shortened 10-kilometre loop starts and ends in Femmøller; the shortcut is at Tremosevej. This makes it possible to compare a short trail, a route with a clearly stated climb and a longer loop based on their different key details.
You can also take the national park stages into account when planning: the Ebeltoft stage can start in Femmøller. The Kalø stage starts at Kalø Slotskro and ends at Femmøller Efterskole. The three stages of the Mols Bjerge-stien meet at the car park in Femmøller. There are also two shelters in Femmøller. They cannot be booked and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. As facilities may change, check the latest information about the shelters before setting out.
Mills, seaside hotel and landscape
The Mølleåen is more than a defining feature of the landscape: four historic mills have been preserved along the river in Femmøller. One of them is Kjerris Mølle. The Femmøller Efterskole building also tells the story of the village. The school is housed in the region’s first seaside hotel, built in 1909. Here, a preserved group of mills and the history of the seaside hotel meet the building’s present-day use as a school.
Nearby, Egil Fischers Mindepark is located just behind Femmøller Beach. The park is an attractive natural area and part of a holiday resort planned in the 1920s, which is considered Denmark’s first planned holiday resort. The water at nearby Femmøller Beach is relatively calm, making it a good place for swimming, sea kayaking and small boats. Public toilets and access to drinking water are also available at the beach. The surrounding area and village therefore offer different ways to plan your trip: trails and mills in Femmøller, natural history at the memorial park, and activities on the water.
Choosing a route and looking for accommodation
Several trails with different lengths and route features are available for hiking; the Mølleåen and historic mills offer a way to explore the village’s history. Femmøller By is also one of the suggested starting points for the Rundt om bjergene cycling route. A bus service runs through Femmøller and stops, among other places, at the car park opposite Femmøller Efterskole. Check the latest timetable before travelling.
