In Them, trails through the countryside meet tangible points of connection to church and regional history. Sections of various hiking and cycling routes run around the town; Them Church, Them Local History Collection and the cheese shop at Them Dairy Cooperative each bring a different theme into focus. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first: should trails and landscapes be the main focus, or visits centred on history and crafts?

Hiking and Cycling Routes Around Them

The Horsens–Silkeborg Nature Trail, also known as Bryrupbanestien, follows the disused railway line between Silkeborg and Horsens. It provides easy and safe cycling access to Silkeborg and is intended for cycling, hiking, inline skating and horseback riding. Its range of permitted activities makes the trail a clear point of reference for anyone wanting to combine their time in Them with outdoor exercise.

Other routes are also found in the area, although they do not all follow the same course: a section of the historic Hærvej runs near Them. The national cycling route from Søndervig to Copenhagen passes through various parts of the area around Them. The regional hiking route between Silkeborg and Aarhus also runs through different parts of the area. It is marked and more than 90 kilometres long—a figure for the entire route, not for a single day’s stage.

Landscape features in the area around Them include heathland such as Vrads Sande. There are lush beech forests in the areas towards Salten Langsø. Heathland and forest are distinct landscape features to consider when planning a trip; the routes, in turn, differ in activity and course.

Church, Collection and Educational History

The chancel and nave of Them Church, the oldest parts of the building, date from around 1200. Inside is a fresco of the Virgin Mary with seven swords pointed at her heart. The church’s architectural history and this striking image are two distinct aspects of the building.

The Them Local History Collection focuses on objects from the region, spanning from the Stone Age to the present day, which can be viewed there. Making wooden clogs is also among the experiences on offer at the collection. Both a broad historical timespan and a specific craft are therefore in focus.

Løvenholt offers a different historical perspective. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was a Grundtvigian folk high school. While the collection includes regional objects from different periods, Løvenholt is associated with a particular educational tradition and a specific historical period.

Cheese Shop, Swimming Pool and Event

Them Dairy Cooperative runs its own cheese shop in Them. It offers a wide selection of the cooperative’s cheeses, including special varieties not sold elsewhere. As visiting arrangements may change, check the current visiting hours in advance.

Them Hallerne offers a public swimming pool and wellness facilities. Check the current opening hours before your visit. Fest i Vand is a separate event: held annually, it transforms Them Swimming Pool into an experience-filled world of sensory impressions and physical challenges. Dates and programme may change, so check the event dates for the year of your trip.

You can choose activities to suit different interests: the routes offer various options for hiking, cycling, inline skating and horseback riding, while the church, collection and Løvenholt each have their own cultural and historical focus. The cheese shop, swimming pool and Fest i Vand add further specific reasons to visit.
