Stadil itself is home to a medieval church; the nearby landscape is shaped by fjords, protected areas and trails. Culture and landscape offer different focal points for planning a trip—from the architecture in Stadil to birdwatching at Vest Stadil Fjord.

Church and Places of Remembrance

Stadil Church dates from the Valdemar era and is situated by Stadil Fjord. Its Romanesque chancel and nave form the oldest part of the church. Late Gothic additions complete the complex, including a west tower and a north porch. The gilded altarpiece dates from around the 12th century. Its 14 decorated panels depict Jesus Christ, scenes from his childhood, apostles, symbols of the Evangelists and angels. The churchyard has masonry portals that may date from the late Middle Ages. This dating is therefore a possibility, not a certainty.

Another historical point of interest is the Flyvergraven ved Stadil. It commemorates the crash of the Avro Lancaster III EE138 at Fuglbjerg, west of Stadil. A memorial stone was erected there in 1950; there is also a commemorative plaque. One of the aircraft’s propeller blades was installed in 2013. Further afield is Strandgaarden, a protected, four-winged dune farm dating from 1875.

Fjord Landscape and Birdlife

Nearby Vest Stadil Fjord is an open meadow area with large lakes, and is also a wildlife reserve and Natura 2000 site. The Stadil Fjord and Vest Stadil Fjord Natura 2000 site is an important resting and feeding area for migratory and breeding birds. Stadil Fjord is a lagoon and one of Denmark’s most species-rich bodies of water. The long, narrow island of Hindø naturally divides it into two basins. These landscape features give the fjord area a different focus from a visit to the church: here, the emphasis is on water, wetlands and birdwatching.

The birdwatching hide at Vest Stadil Fjord has information boards, an accessible toilet, tables and a barbecue area. The hide can be reached by following the “udkigstårnet 500 m” signs and offers views of the fjord’s birdlife. Stadiløvej, east of Søndre Dyb, is also a good place for seasonal birdwatching: in May, look for golden plovers; in autumn, for lapwings, geese, shore larks and birds of prey. If you are planning your trip around particular species, check local information in advance and take the season into account.

Trails and Practical Planning

A combined horse-riding, cycling and walking trail runs along the eastern edge of Vest Stadil Fjord, following the top of the old dyke. It begins at the northernmost car park on Stadiløvej and ends at the car park on Vesterhavsvej. The Vestkyststien also runs from north to south along the eastern side of the fjord and is part of the North Sea Cycle Route, which passes through eight countries around the North Sea. Another cycling option is the signed 27.4-kilometre Panoramarute Fuglenes Fjord, Route 408, which takes you to Vest Stadil Fjord.

For a walk along Stadil Fjord, the 5.8-kilometre Hindø Route is another option. It passes through dry grassland, meadows and reed beds. Bitterns and marsh harriers breed in the reed beds; swans, coots and ducks rest on the fjord. The different route lengths and activities can help you choose between walking and cycling, but do not indicate how long either activity will take.

If you are travelling to the southern part of Vest Stadil Fjord by public transport, the journey involves a train to Ringkøbing, bus route 580 to Kloster, and then a 6.4-kilometre walk to Stadiløvej. Check the timetable before you travel. Husby Klit is also part of the wider area: this 14-kilometre dune spit stretches along the west coast of Jutland, from Nissum Fjord in the north to Vest Stadil Fjord in the south.
