The Arresø Canal, which forms the outlet from Arresø to Roskilde Fjord, flows through Frederiksværk. The town lies between Denmark’s largest lake and the fjord. This means two themes go hand in hand when planning a trip: the waterscape and the industrial history reflected in the historic town centre and cultural venues. In between, trails, exhibitions and seasonal activities offer different ways to shape your stay.

Waterscapes and trails

Arresødal Skov lies right next to the town and is a popular recreational area for the people of Frederiksværk. Bakkestien offers views over Frederiksværk and Roskilde Fjord. This gives you a choice of different landscape perspectives: the canal as part of the connection between lake and fjord, the forest right beside the town, and the view from Bakkestien. If you would like to combine nature and culture, you can plan these as separate highlights alongside the historic sites.

The signposted historic hiking route “Kongemagt og Vandets Kraft” follows the Arresø Canal to Arrenæs near Frederiksværk. The route has 5, 7 and 11-kilometre options. The green option runs along roads and good paths and is accessible to everyone, including people using wheelchairs or other mobility aids. Check the condition of the paths and the signage before setting out. The three distances offer different route options.

There are also seasonal opportunities on the water. During the summer half of the year, the excursion boat MS Frederikke departs from the canal at Arresødal according to a set timetable; check the schedule before your trip. Frederiksværk Camping & Vandrehjem offers canoe and kayak rentals every day throughout the summer. This lets you explore the fjord and canal at your own pace. The boat trip and rentals are different options: MS Frederikke runs to a set timetable, while rentals let you explore at your own pace. Check seasonal availability in advance.

Industrial history in the town

The historic town centre, with its old houses, historic industrial buildings and workers’ homes, is designated a national industrial monument and a heritage area. This heritage designation applies not only to individual industrial sites, but also to the town centre and its various building types. Krudtværket is one of Denmark’s best-preserved industrial environments.

Krudtværksmuseet showcases historic powder mills along the canal in Frederiksværk and offers insight into the dangerous work of making gunpowder. The preserved buildings contain original machinery that can still be set in motion today. The exhibition thus connects the industrial sites along the canal with the machinery and work involved in making gunpowder.

Arsenalet houses an exhibition on Frederiksværk’s industrial history and the many products manufactured during the town’s more than 250 years of development as an industrial town. It broadens the focus from the powder mills to the wider history of production in the town. This is a useful distinction when choosing what to explore: Krudtværksmuseet focuses on powder mills and gunpowder production, while Arsenalet focuses on industrial history and its products.

Art and cultural programme

Ågalleriet presents changing exhibitions of fine art, photography and graphic art in a natural setting beside the stream in the Krudtværksområdet. The historic industrial building behind Gjethuset is home to six active artists at Kunstnerhuset. Gjethuset is now an arts and cultural venue offering theatre, music and art exhibitions. There are several distinct cultural highlights to choose from: changing visual art exhibitions at Ågalleriet, the artists at Kunstnerhuset or the programme at Gjethuset. As the programme changes, check the specific dates if a particular event is important to your trip.

Plan your journey

Lokaltog trains and several bus routes stop in Frederiksværk and connect to the rest of Halsnæs and North Zealand. As timetables and connections can change, check the connections for your travel date. This makes it possible to coordinate your journey, routes and any seasonal activities without treating the different options as interchangeable.
