Viking Age by the Fjord

Frederikssund can be explored through two facets of the Viking Age: reconstructed dwellings and a summer stage by the fjord. At the Viking settlement, there are five reconstructed pit houses; the longhouse represents a permanent Viking residence. The Frederikssund Viking Play takes place every summer in June and July at the Kalvøen open-air theatre by Roskilde Fjord. Guided tours offered by the Viking Play include a walk with views over the fjord and a visit to the Viking settlement. This lets you encounter the historical subject and its theatrical interpretation in different formats. Check performance dates before your visit.

Museum Trails Through History

The Frederikssund Museum Færgegården presents life by the fjord from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum includes a prehistoric trail and a prehistoric settlement site. The garden is also open to the public free of charge when the museum is closed. In the museum garden, a Natureventyr route leads through reconstructions of prehistoric scenarios. Its story comprises six to eight chapters; GPS coordinates and physical markers guide your exploration.

At the museum in Jægerspris Castle, you can visit rooms from the time of Countess Danner and King Frederik VII. The castle also offers various cultural activities. The park and the grove with memorial stones surrounding Jægerspris Castle are open to the public free of charge. Selsø Castle was built in the 1570s by the nobleman Jakob Ulfeldt. Its Empire-style rooms feature Baroque wall paintings and wallpaper. Activities and events for children and adults take place there throughout the year, including nature events, concerts, talks and Manor House Day.

Fjord, Forest and Trails

Roskilde Fjord is characterised by narrow shipping channels, numerous small islands and very shallow water; the depth is less than six metres almost everywhere. It has been designated a wildlife reserve since 1995. Today, it is mainly used for recreational sailing and eel fishing. Fjordstien is a nature trail along Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord. Its entire 275-kilometre length is intended for cyclists and hikers. Small blue signs mark the route, which also has route number 40.

Jægerspris Nordskov consists of Fælledskoven to the west and Studehaven to the east. At its highest point, Frederikshøj, stands the hunting lodge of Frederik VII. Sillebro Ådal lies in the centre of Frederikssund. There, you are allowed to barbecue, make fires and stay overnight in the shelters. Within Frederikssund Municipality, you can launch and take out kayaks at all coastal locations accessible by public roads or paths.

Beaches and Seasonal Connections

Kalvøen has a 640-metre-long bathing beach. You can swim at the beach from the rowing club’s pontoon bridge. Marbæk Beach has rescue equipment and Blue Flag status; this status may change between seasons. Check the status for the relevant season before your visit.

The motor ferry MF Columbus operates between Kulhuse at the northern tip of Hornsherred and Sølager on the southern side of Halsnæs. It runs approximately from 1 April until the autumn holidays. Check the timetable before travelling.

Culture in Everyday Life

Parkteatret is Frederikssund Municipality’s regional theatre and stages theatrical performances. The Elværket cultural centre provides a setting for cultural and artistic events and activities. Since it opened in January 1994, it has hosted more than 25,000 music events, theatre performances, talks, meetings, courses, conferences, fairs and other events.

Frederikssund Church also tells of different eras: it dates from the 12th century and retains furnishings from the 17th century. The pulpit was painted by Peder Maler in Helsingør in 1606 and made by Bernt Snedker in Slangerup. On Torvet, the free Saturday market brings together local producers, craftspeople, associations, food stalls and flea market traders.
