Frederikssund lies on Roskilde Fjord and combines a strong Viking tradition with an S-train connection to the capital. Since 1952, the Frederikssund Vikingespil has staged Viking performances every year on the open-air stage at Kalvøen. The S-train runs every 10 minutes and reaches Copenhagen Central Station in about 45 minutes. If you include Frederikssund in your travel plans, check the timetable for your specific travel date. This lets you consider both the local culture and the connection to Copenhagen when choosing your destination. The frequency describes how often the service runs, while the journey time describes how long it takes to reach Copenhagen Central Station.

Kalvøen: Viking area and open-air stage

Kalvøen has a park and an open-air stage where the Vikingespil is performed in summer. With costumes and swords, the play brings thrilling dramas based on Danish Viking sagas and myths to life. Before the performances, visitors can take guided tours of the Viking area. If you want to combine a performance with a guided tour, the timing is already set: the tours take place before the performances.

In the south of Kalvøen is Vikingebopladsen, at the entrance to the entire Viking area, which includes the open-air stage and the longhouse Valhal. Vikingebopladsen is an open-air museum; admission is normally free. It has five pit houses: small houses partly set into the ground that served as workshops and, in some cases, temporary dwellings. Kalvøen was once an island in Roskilde Fjord.

Art, history and events

Willumsens Museum has a collection of 8,000 works. It also offers opportunities for creative educational programs and activities for children and adults. Frederikssund Church brings a longer historical perspective: its roots date back to the 12th century, and its pulpit dates from 1606. The church also hosts concerts and lectures.

Kulturhuset Elværket hosts exhibitions. Numerous events take place there throughout the year, organized by users and members. This year-round schedule differs from the summer Vikingespil when it comes to choosing a date. The present-day Kronprins Frederiks Bro provides another historical reference point: it was opened to car traffic on October 30, 1935.

Time outdoors in Frederikssund

Sillebro Ådal is located in the middle of Frederikssund and offers a wide range of outdoor activities. Visitors are allowed to stay overnight in the shelters at Sillebro Ådal; barbecues and campfires are also permitted. So, alongside cultural attractions, there are outdoor activities and the option of spending the night in a shelter. The different themes—from summer stage performances to art and history to time in the valley—give you several specific starting points for planning your trip.
