The protected oak at the inlet of the former mill, towards Rohozná, is more than 150 years old—a distinctive natural landmark in the surroundings of Nový Rychnov, shaped by ponds, meadows and forests. The town combines this landscape character with a Gothic church, a Renaissance chateau and the remains of a field fortification. This gives you two clear themes to consider when planning your trip: nature and local history.

Landscape and protected nature

Nový Rychnov lies in a valley surrounded by hills in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Forests, meadows and ponds shape the surroundings, and there are good opportunities for hiking and cycling around the town. The ponds are part of a broader landscape that also includes open meadows and wooded areas.

The Ivaniny rybníčky Natural Monument lies in the Pelhřimov District, within the territory of the market town of Nový Rychnov (the cadastral area of Sázava pod Křemešníkem) and the municipality of Proseč pod Křemešníkem (the cadastral area of Proseč pod Křemešníkem). Its protected features are pond habitats with specially protected species. The natural character of the area is therefore not defined only by the landscape in general: pond habitats and the species protected there are specifically at its heart.

These natural features vary in scale: the valley provides the landscape setting, Ivaniny rybníčky is a specific protected area, and the oak is a single protected tree. If nature is a priority, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the wider surroundings or on specific protected sites.

Church, chateau and other local history

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in the Gothic style between 1343 and 1363; the presbytery is all that remains of the original building. The Leskovec family remodelled the chateau in the Renaissance style to serve as a rural aristocratic residence. The comparison reveals two different approaches to architectural history: for the church, the construction date and surviving original fabric are significant; for the chateau, it is the Renaissance remodelling and its function as a rural aristocratic residence.

Another historical trace is the surviving remains of the V Šancích field fortification, with its ditches and ramparts. It adds a fortification to the architectural history, distinguishing it from the church and chateau as a religious and an aristocratic building, respectively.

A municipal notice dated 16 September 2024 located the museum in the lower part of the former savings bank building, house number 160; the building had previously been a drugstore.

Events and specific dates

Novorychnovské stezky is a traditional event in Nový Rychnov. The 5 September 2026 edition was scheduled to start and finish at the municipal restaurant by the town hall. Z Nadhledu is an annual event in Nový Rychnov; the edition on 3 January 2026 followed a marked route with a stop by a fire. The two editions take place in January and September, respectively. If you are planning your trip around an event, please check the date of the relevant edition in advance.
