Košetice offers a look at cultural history in different forms: a church with medieval origins, castle buildings, a chapel, a former synagogue and a Jewish cemetery. There is also a clearly measured hiking route: the bonus stage of the Santiniho stezka from Červená Řečice to the castle in Košetice. When planning your trip, two different questions therefore matter: Which historical themes would you like to explore, and which of the places mentioned are accessible? The situation differs particularly clearly between the Jewish cemetery and Nový zámek.
Jewish Heritage and Present-Day Use
The Jewish cemetery in Košetice is in a wooded area southeast of the town. It is freely accessible; check the access information again before you travel. The oldest gravestones date from around the early 18th century. A visit thus connects a specific historical period with the cemetery’s setting in the wooded surroundings.
The former synagogue, house number 76, was built around the first half of the 19th century and is now used as a residence. In contrast to the cemetery, the focus here shifts from gravestones and cemetery history to a former religious building that is now used as a home. If you would like to visit the synagogue, check in advance whether access is possible.
Churches and Castle History
The Church of St. John the Baptist dates back to the Middle Ages. It is a single-nave church with a rectangular presbytery—that is, a rectangular chancel—a prismatic tower and two Baroque statues of saints. Its floor plan, tower shape and furnishings thus offer distinct architectural points of interest.
The Chapel of the Passion of Christ (Bolestí Kristových) is also listed as a protected cultural monument. Together with the church, it is one of Košetice’s designated religious cultural monuments.
Starý zámek is listed as a protected cultural monument. Its grounds include a park adjoining the castle and farmyard on the south, west and north sides. The park consists of three interconnected areas, each with a different character. Its position along three sides and its internal layout convey two distinct aspects of the complex: its connection to the castle and farmyard, and the variety of its park areas.
Nový zámek was created in the 1720s by converting a disused rectory. As of August 24, 2026, the building was privately owned and not open to the public. As its status may change, check again before planning a visit.
Hiking Trails and Event Routes
The bonus stage of the Santiniho stezka runs from Červená Řečice to the castle in Košetice, covering 11 km. It offers a hiking option with a clearly stated distance. Route details may change; check the route before making plans.
The “Kolem dokola Košeticka” cycling and hiking event returned after a year’s break; its 8th edition took place on August 26, 2023. For this edition, the recommended hiking and cycling routes were signposted and ran partly along forest and field roads and woodland paths. Signposting and routes may vary from one edition to another. If you are planning to attend a specific edition, check the date and route information for that particular event.
