Bridge building, a village green and hill country define the character of Hořice U Humpolce. The Vojslavický road bridge, a house with folk architecture elements and a relocated memorial stone represent different aspects of local culture. There is also a cycle path through the northern part of the settlement, as well as a landscape with varied relief, valleys and part of the Švihov Reservoir. This allows you to explore Hořice according to your cultural interests or appreciation of the landscape.
A bridge built in two stages
The Vojslavický road bridge consists of a lower arched bridge and an upper bridge. The lower one was built between 1939 and 1950, and the upper one between 1972 and 1979. The construction phases can be distinguished both by when they were built and by their position within the structure: the older arched bridge forms the lower level, while the later bridge forms the upper level. For travellers interested in the history of engineering, this offers a concrete comparison within a single structure. The Vojslavický road bridge is also the only immovable cultural monument in the municipality of Hořice listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments. Its construction history and protected-monument status are two distinct aspects of the same bridge.
The village green and local heritage
The village green offers another perspective on local culture. A culturally valuable house with elements of folk architecture stands on its north side. In the middle of the village green is a memorial stone known as a “smírčí kámen” (reconciliation stone); it was relocated there and is considered an object of cultural and historical value. The house and stone offer different points of focus: one evokes folk architecture, the other serves as a memorial. Together, they broaden the view beyond bridge engineering and give the village green its own cultural focus.
Cycle path and motorway: two scales
For travellers on a bike, cycle route No. 0084 is a specific local feature: it runs through the northern part of the Hořice settlement along road III/13027. This identifies a particular stretch within the settlement and makes cycling a distinct topic alongside local heritage. At a different scale, the D1 motorway from Prague to Brno runs around Hořice. These two transport details answer different orientation questions: the cycle route is described in relation to the northern part of the settlement, while the motorway is described in terms of its route around the village.
Relief, land use and water
The Hořice area is characterised mainly by varied Hercynian hills and uplands, as well as forestry and agriculture. Along its southeastern to eastern edges, the land gradually gives way to deeply incised valleys. Thus, alongside its relief, forestry and agriculture also shape the character of the landscape. The most significant body of water for Hořice is a section of the Švihov Reservoir on the Želivka River. The reservoir is used to treat drinking water. Its function adds another distinct dimension to the description of the relief and land use.
