Rozsochy brings together a clearly datable architectural history with railway and route connections. The Church of St. Bartholomew and the railway station’s ancillary building represent different historical themes; they are joined by the Masopust tradition, as well as a cycling route and a hiking route with the option of returning by train. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose different focuses, from architecture and customs to an excursion with a railway connection.
Church and Architectural Monuments
The oldest known written mention of the church in Rozsochy dates from 1285. St. Bartholomew’s preserves an older core of the building and features late Baroque architecture. The church’s extensive Baroque transformation began in 1763. Thus, an early written mention and a later architectural change belong to different historical contexts; the older masonry adds another perspective to this timeline.
Three stone sculptures with dates on their pedestals stand beside the church. The sandstone statue of St. John of Nepomuk bears the date 1766, and the sandstone statue of the Archangel Michael, 1767. The sandstone statue of the Crucifixion is dated 1772. The dates on the pedestals thus range from 1766 to 1772, giving the sculptures a shared period without dating them to the same year.
Another cultural monument is the ancillary building of Rozsochy railway station, dating from 1903–1904. It has been preserved in exceptionally authentic condition. Its features include doors with stained glass, decorative gabled boarding, shaped beam ends and stone corbels. These details bring together glass, wood and stone: beam ends are the ends of beams, while corbels are projecting stone elements. This allows the architecture to be described through specific building features, not just its construction date.
Masopust and the Church Feast
The Ostatková zábava, which includes the burial of Masopust, takes place every year on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. At the end of 2025, the event was added to the List of Intangible Assets of Traditional Folk Culture of the Vysočina Region. The Masopust burial ritual has designated ceremonial roles, including a master of ceremonies, bell ringers, a military guard, pallbearers, a widow and a priest. These roles give the celebration a clearly structured ceremonial form. As its date is tied to Ash Wednesday, it is worth checking the date for the relevant year before travelling.
The programme for the 2024 Bartolomějská pouť included a morning Mass at the Church of St. Bartholomew, a craft market, fairground attractions, food and drink, and market stalls. The religious occasion and the market and fairground offerings were part of the same programme, but had different focuses. To take part in the craft market as an exhibitor, participants had to make their own crafts or give a practical demonstration of how they were made.
Railways, Cycling and Hiking
Rozsochy railway station is on railway line 256 between Žďár nad Sázavou, Nové Město na Moravě and Tišnov. All platforms are step-free. If you are planning to arrive by train, check the timetable for your chosen travel date.
The Santini cycling route passes through Rozsochy. The BystĹ™ice–VojetĂn–Rozsochy hiking route offers a different planning option: from Rozsochy, you can return to BystĹ™ice by train. With the cycling route, the connection to the town is that it passes through; the hiking option also offers the explicitly stated possibility of returning by train. You can choose between them based on whether you would prefer to focus on a cycling trip or a hike with the option of returning by train.
