Nová Ves u Nového Města na Moravě combines an old settlement layout with local customs that are still observed today. Its original layout as a green village around a central square gives the village’s history a tangible spatial context; the Masopust carnival procession and the tradition of children going around with rattles add further cultural themes. There is also a chapel, fishing competitions at the pond, and local sports facilities.
Village history and places of remembrance
The settlement was established as early as the 13th century; its first documented written mention dates to 1397. The 13th century marks its establishment, while 1397 marks the first written record. These are therefore two distinct reference points in the village’s history. The original layout as a green village also tells a part of this history in its own right. The buildings were concentrated around a central square; the term describes a specific settlement form, not simply a great age. The village’s historical development and its original layout can thus be considered separately.
A later place of remembrance is the monument to the victims of the First World War, erected in 1929. It was created from a design by Karel Němec, a painter and graphic artist from Nové Město. Unlike the early history of the settlement, the monument commemorates the war dead of the 20th century. Nová Ves thus brings together two clearly distinct historical layers: the development of the village and remembrance of the First World War.
Long-standing customs and the Chapel of Saint Anne
A masked Masopust carnival procession is maintained as a local tradition. In addition, children go around the village with rattles during the week before Easter; this custom is also observed. The two traditions differ in form: a masked procession is contrasted with children going around with rattles. The Easter custom has a clear seasonal connection for visitors planning their trip, while the Masopust procession adds its own tradition to the village’s cultural character.
Masses are regularly held at the Chapel of Saint Anne. If you would like to plan a visit around one, check the current service schedule in advance. Fishing competitions are held at the pond below the chapel. The chapel and pond therefore represent different aspects of local life: religious practice and fishing competitions.
Sports facilities and regional orientation
Local sports facilities include two grass football pitches and a multi-purpose court with artificial turf. The information distinguishes the two football pitches from the multi-purpose facility and specifies the surface of each. The sports facilities thus complement the village’s cultural and historical themes with a different focus.
