In Křižanov, sacred history and landscape can be discovered at specific sites. The Church of St. Wenceslas preserves traces of different periods of construction; the memorial to Saint Zdislava is a modern sacred feature in the historic centre. Křižanov lies in the Českomoravská vrchovina, and the Libochůvka stream flows through the town. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the history of churches and memorials, religious sites, or the landscape of the municipality.

Churches and traces of their history

The first written mention of the Church of St. Wenceslas dates from 1239. A Romanesque building probably already stood on the site of today’s church in the 11th century. The current presbytery dates back to the 14th-century Gothic reconstruction.

The Chapel of St. Barbara adds an early medieval core to this picture. It is located at the corner of Zámek and Bezručova streets. This means that two distinct building histories stand side by side in Křižanov: at St. Wenceslas, several periods can be distinguished, while at St. Barbara, the early core is a prominent point of reference.

Zdislava: Biography, Memorial and Pilgrimage

Saint Zdislava was born around 1220 in Křižanov, the first child of Přibyslav and Sybila. Her modern sacred memorial stands in the historic centre; Křižanov is described as the saint’s birthplace. The central feature of the memorial is a bronze sculpture of Saint Zdislava by Otmar Oliva. It is accompanied by a circular fountain and a ring of twelve granite columns. The biographical date and modern design bring together different periods.

The Zdislavská pouť takes place annually at the end of May; the exact date may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the pilgrimage, check the specific date in advance.

Sacred sites in the town and its surroundings

For the 2024–2029 period, the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk on Masaryk Square and the Marian column on Benešovo Square are also among Křižanov’s tourist attractions. In the surrounding area, a picturesque open-air pilgrimage chapel stands on Svatá hora. Today it is visited not only by the faithful, but also by tourists seeking tranquillity away from the bustle of the modern world. This allows you to distinguish between named sacred sites in the town and a pilgrimage chapel in the surrounding area.

Landscape and events

The territory of Křižanov includes numerous wooded areas, as well as fields, meadows and field margins. Together with the Libochůvka, they form the town’s landscape landmarks. They complement the specific churches and memorials with a view of the municipality’s landscape.

The Křižanov Aeroclub airfield hosts national-level competitive flying events and sightseeing flights. Competition dates may vary. Before your trip, check the current public availability of sightseeing flights. For the 2024–2029 period, Středověký podvečer is also among Křižanov’s best-known cultural and social events. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check its date.
