A late Baroque parish church, the remains of a fortified settlement and a marked circular trail reveal different sides of Vratěnín. If you are planning a stay, you can first decide whether you are more interested in church art and local history or in a hike rated as moderately difficult.
Churches, postal history and the heritage zone
The parish church of St James the Greater was built between 1771 and 1773 in the late Baroque style. Three 18th-century sculptures stand at the church: a sandstone statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus from the second quarter of the century, and figures of St Francis Xavier and St John of Nepomuk. Both are made of shell limestone and date from the first third of the 18th century. Their different dates give the church’s furnishings distinct points of reference in relation to the building’s history.
The former monastery church tells another story of the town’s religious history. It was consecrated in 1739 and had two towers, two chapels and seven altars. It later burned down and no longer survives intact. The former post station building is another historic trace of the town: it was built around 1700 by postmaster Jan Plessner. Vratěnín and Slavonice were the first post stations in Moravia. The former manor house on the market square is considered to have originally been a fortress.
There are 21 listed monuments in the cadastral area of Vratěnín. In recognition of its heritage value, the town was declared a village heritage zone in 1995; its official Czech designation is Vesnická památková zóna. These details describe two different aspects: the number of protected properties in the cadastral area and the designation of the village as a heritage zone.
The U kola archaeological site and Bílý kříž
The “U kola” archaeological site preserves the remains of a fortified settlement with a circular ground plan and a diameter of 65 metres. The site at “U kola” has a 35-metre central area, surrounded by a ditch 10 to 12 metres wide and 3.15 metres deep. These measurements refer to different parts of the site: the diameter describes the circular ground plan, while the central area and ditch give further dimensions. Materials found in the vicinity of the site date from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, La Tène period and Early Middle Ages.
The Bílý kříž Nature Reserve protects vegetation on steep, sunny rocky slopes, the adjoining forest with its rich range of species and age groups, and protected plant and animal species. The reserve takes its name from the rocky viewpoint of Bílý kříž. A marked trail, the Graselova Trail, starts there.
Hiking and other historical topics
The Graselova stezka Vratěnín is a circular trail of moderate difficulty, approximately 7 to 11 kilometres long, with three stops. It passes Vratěnínský rybník and branches off to Graselova vyhlídka or Zlatá studánka. This gives hikers both an approximate distance range and specific landmarks to help with planning; the two branches lead to different destinations.
The fortifications also have their own place in the town’s history. The fortifications mini-museum is housed in an unusual ŘOPík vz. 37 A-120N bunker dating from 1937. In connection with the fortifications, visitors can view historic weapons and equipment and learn about the so-called “false border” from the era of the former regime.
A free guided tour of Vratěnín can be arranged for groups of at least ten visitors, at least three days before the visit. As advance-booking details may change, check them before making plans. Another historical reference is Šibeník Hill: in 1750, local residents decided to erect a statue of St Donatus there. He is venerated as the patron saint against storms, lightning and hail, and was intended to protect the village and its fields.
