Citonice can be understood through its specific buildings, a recurring community event and its location in the surrounding area. At the village square, a blue-marked hiking trail from Znojmo to Olbramkostel passes the church; the village also has historic monuments and two well towers. Different protected areas lie to the south and north. These offer different starting points for planning your trip: local culture, a named hiking connection and landscape features nearby remain clearly distinguishable from one another.
Church at the Village Square and Marked Trail
The nave of the Church of St. John and Paul is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes. A barrel vault follows a longitudinal form; lunettes cut into the vault surface from the sides. This means the described ceiling can be understood as a main form with lateral recesses. A four-sided tower stands on the axis of the main façade. The information about the church thus covers both the design of the interior and the position of the tower on the façade.
The blue-marked hiking trail from Znojmo to Olbramkostel passes the church at the village square. The named endpoints and the route past the church square give the trail a specific connection to Citonice. Anyone who takes both buildings and hiking trails into account when choosing a destination can regard this trail as a distinct connection: it passes the church, whose architectural features can be described independently in terms of its vault and tower.
Monuments and Historic Well Towers
The statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands on a square, two-tiered plinth. The bell-shaped, four-sided plinth widens considerably towards the bottom and is topped by a prominent moulded cornice with a large sculpted rosette. The description thus highlights several forms: the stepped design, the plinth widening towards the bottom and the richly designed top.
The Zděná poklona has a different profile: this three-part, prismatic wayside shrine has a two-tiered base; simple, projecting cornices separate its individual sections. In contrast to the rosette on the statue, the emphasis here is on the simple division created by the cornices. Those interested in architectural forms can compare two different types of design without losing sight of the church. Citonice also has two historic well towers. Together with the church and monuments, they expand the range of local buildings with another historic group.
Community Life and a Festival in 2025
At Mlýnek pond, the Citonice Fishing Association holds fishing competitions for children and adults several times a year, following the catch-and-release principle. The pond is therefore linked to a recurring community event. For travellers who take activities and events into account, the format is also specified: the competitions follow the catch-and-release principle.
Another example is Citonické posvícení 2025. During the festival, a traditional procession made its way through the village, accompanied by the Miroslav Kubák band. The two events differ: the fishing competitions are held several times a year, while the procession is described as part of the 2025 festival. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check suitable dates in advance.
Location in the Surrounding Area
Podyjí National Park lies south of Citonice; Jevišovka Nature Park is to the north. The cardinal directions help distinguish the two landscapes. They are also designated differently, as a national park and a nature park. If you take the surroundings into account when choosing your destination, you can first consider which direction and which type of protected area better suits your interests.
The Znojmo–Moravské Budějovice railway line also runs northeast of Citonice. Together with the directions given for the two landscapes, it offers another geographic point of reference: the railway line to the northeast, Podyjí to the south and Jevišovka to the north. These details can be considered separately rather than combined into a single route.
Find Accommodation for Your Stay
When choosing where to stay, you can also consider whether you would like to focus mainly on the buildings in the village, the hiking connection at the village square, community life or the landscape features in the surrounding area.
