Horní Dubňany combines village history with a specific connection to cycling: the Parish Church of St Peter and Paul is part of a historic church ensemble, while the Mlynářská Trail passes through the village and continues as far as Hardegg. Two different highlights can help you plan your visit: ecclesiastical architecture and religious monuments on the one hand, and the cycling route and rolling surroundings on the other. This makes it easy to decide whether your stay should focus mainly on the village’s historic landmarks or on planning a tour.

St Peter and Paul: building history and details

The Parish Church of St Peter and Paul has a Romanesque core and was probably built as early as the 12th century. The stone Romanesque entrance portal dates more precisely to the second half of that century. Animal reliefs can be seen on the sides of the lintel. The difference in date between the church’s presumed construction and the more precisely dated portal makes the entrance portal a distinctive feature of the ensemble.

The surrounding wall is also an important structural and architectural part of the church ensemble. Tombs of the owners of the Tulešice estate are arranged around it. Both the wall itself and the tombs are tangible features that draw attention beyond the Romanesque portal to the wider architectural complex.

A protected cross stands by the church. At its base are St Mary Magdalene and an angel holding a cartouche. A Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk also stands near the church. The cross and statue add two distinct religious monuments to the architectural details.

St Peter and Paul is an active parish church with regular services. If you plan to attend a service, check the times in advance, as the service schedule may change.

A Holy Week tradition throughout the village

A municipal description from 2014, updated in January 2020, reports that the annual Holy Week tradition has remained unchanged for several generations. According to the description, the boys of Horní Dubňany gather at the church with their Hrkači. They then follow the traditional route through the entire village, pushing the rattles known as Trakače ahead of them. The tradition thus links the gathering place at the church with a procession through the whole village.

Cycling route and landscape

The themed Mlynářská Trail passes through Horní Dubňany and continues as far as Hardegg. If you plan to take this route, check its course and signage before setting off. The village’s surroundings are characterised by rolling countryside with fields and occasional small patches of woodland. Alongside the church ensemble, a specific cycling route and a rural landscape offer different highlights for your stay.

Pod Rybníkem is also located within the cadastral area of Horní Dubňany. It is a Site of Community Importance designated under the national list, with code CZ 0622176, and forms part of the Natura 2000 network. This protected-area designation adds a specific named site to the general description of the landscape.
