Podbřežice combines a church history with a clearly documented date, monuments in the village and a geological destination to the south. The Church of St Peter and St Paul was consecrated in 1907; its bell dates from 1603, while a gravestone belonging to the painter Ondřej is dated 1599. An iron cross and a war memorial add to the village’s historic landmarks. The Mechovkový útes geotope lies 1.5 kilometres south of Podbřežice. This offers distinct focal points for planning your trip: local history and geotourism. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these interests can help you tailor your stay to what you enjoy.

The church and earlier historical evidence

The Neo-Gothic Church of St Peter and St Paul was consecrated on 14 June 1907. It houses a bell cast by Zachariáš Milner in Olomouc in 1603. The gravestone of the painter Ondřej dates from 1599: it was moved from the original church to the cemetery and is now in the Church of St Peter and St Paul. The dates place the three objects in a clear sequence: first the gravestone, then the bell four years later, and, considerably later, the consecration of the church. Alongside the church’s construction, there are two older individual objects, each with its own historical date. The architectural style, the bell’s place of manufacture and the gravestone’s relocation offer different points of interest for anyone interested in church history and individual historical objects.

Monuments in the village

The iron cross in Podbřežice also connects several periods. It was made in 1834 at the ironworks in Blansko and stands at the former crossroads of the road to Komořany. In 2012, it was restored under the supervision of the Brno office of the National Heritage Institute. Its place of manufacture, former location and restoration shed light on different aspects of the monument. The parish acquired the cast-iron statue of St John of Nepomuk in 1885; today it stands in front of a church. The war memorial “Pomník Obětem 1. a 2. světové války” is located in the park on Podbřežice village square, in front of the church. Its name commemorates the victims of the First and Second World Wars. Together, the cross, statue and war memorial complement the church-related historical evidence with religious and community monuments.

The geotope south of Podbřežice

The Mechovkový útes geotope lies 1.5 kilometres south of Podbřežice and is part of the small protected area “Stepní stráně u Komořan”. It is regarded as a geotourism attraction and an excursion site. Alongside the historic sites in the village, this offers a geological point of interest to the south. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus your stay mainly on the monuments or also consider geotourism as an area of interest.

Cycling route and trip planning

A 900-metre section of cycle path between Komořany and Podbřežice is listed with the year 2024. If you would like to include it in a cycling tour, check the full route and current route information before planning. This allows you to take the cycle path into account alongside the local cultural attractions or the geotope south of the village. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may help to decide first which of these interests will be most important during your stay.
