At the foot of the 346 m-high Hačky hill, three streams meet: Skalecký potok, Josefínský potok and Labutský potok. Labuty is a historic wine-growing settlement in a valley on Skalecký potok, about 10 km northeast of Kyjov. The confluence, valley and hill provide different geographical landmarks for finding your way around the village.

Streams and Landscape

Labuty lies in a gently rolling landscape crossed by the valleys of three local streams. Labutský potok flows into Skalecký potok as a left-bank tributary. Above Labuty, the intermittent stream has a natural character: its varied bed has a stony bottom with sediment deposits. It is accompanied there by continuous, dense riverside vegetation, including alder, poplar, willow and ash trees.

In the built-up area of Labuty, by contrast, the bed is regulated and trapezoidal. It has a muddy bottom and steep, grass-covered banks that are partly characterized by ruderal vegetation. The two sections therefore differ clearly: above the village, the landscape is shaped by natural features, a stony bottom and dense woodland; in the built-up area, by the regulated channel and its constructed banks.

Chapel and Remembrance

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary, with its bell tower, dates from 1834 and was built on the site of an older wooden chapel. The year 1940 above the entrance commemorates the most recent renovation. The two dates therefore refer to different building phases: 1834, when the chapel was built on the site of an older wooden structure, and 1940, when it was last renovated.

A memorial commemorates school principal Jindřich Škoda, who died at Auschwitz concentration camp on 13 March 1943. The memorial was unveiled on 11 November 1945. The dates mark two separate events: Škoda’s death and the later unveiling of the memorial.

The crosses can also be distinguished by their materials, dates and locations. A stone cross dating from 1904 stands at the intersection of the regional road and the village square. At the cadastral boundary with the municipality of Skalka is a cast-iron cross on a stone plinth dating from 1905. Another cross stands at the entrance to the built-up area of Labuty, coming from the direction of Skalka. The locations range from an intersection to the cadastral boundary and the village entrance.

In the Wider Travel Area

Cesta krajinou mikroregionu Podchřibí is a regional route. It connects the municipalities of the microregion with the Chřiby Mountains and leads to places of interest as well as through the surrounding countryside. The Rozhledna Súsedská observation tower is also in the Podchřibí microregion. It is 21 m high and has a total of 99 steps. The route and observation tower add a regional perspective to the view of Labuty.
